Sunset Music Festival Artist Spotlight: Shogun
Sunset Music Festival is right around the corner. And with the new world-class lineup additions on the devoted trance stage Isis, there are so many reasons to join us May 25th. What are you waiting for? Buy your tickets now! One of those new additions is internationally known producer, Shogun.
Naming himself after the Japanese word for warrior, Shogun’s (Andrew Chen) love for electronic music came softly. Although the American-born, Taiwanese artist was familiar with the certain elements of the genre from listening to bands like Nine Inch Nails and Filter, it wasn’t until 2002, after hearing Armin Van Buuren’s “Communication,” that Shogun submersed himself in trance music and began playing at local clubs. He started making a name for himself during his two year residency at the Ministry of Sound in Taiwan warming up for DJs like Tiësto and Paul Oakenfold. After his time in Taipei, he returned stateside to study audio engineering in Hollywood.
Often spending 12 hours in the studio, Shogun produced around 200 tracks in three years. His first single was signed by S107, sub-label to Armin van Buuren’s Armada, making him the first Asian-American to be signed to the prestigious imprint. His songs continued to gain attention being supported by the likes of Above & Beyond and fellow Sunsetters Ferry Corsten, and Markus Schulz. And it wouldn’t take long before “Imprisoned,” “Save Me,” “Run To My Rescue,” and “Skyfire” would become anthems and cement Shogun’s name in the catalogue of other heavyweights. More recently, originals “UFO,” “Amplify,” “Lotus” and remix of BT, Arty and Nadia Ali’s “Must Be The Love” have all smashed the charts and been championed sets by some of the world’s top trance DJs. Buy your passes and help us welcome dance music warrior, Shogun to Sunset Music Festival!
Sunset Music Festival's Weekend Mix Warriors: David Guetta, Markus Schulz, and heRobust!
With two weeks and counting left on the countdown to Sunset Music Festival, the anticipation is just killing us. We can’t wait for you all to join us on the dance floor–or by the water slides. If you haven’t yet, buy your tickets now so you don’t miss out on all the fun! And the music. We can’t talk about Sunset without mentioning our amazing lineup complete with world-renowned veteran DJs, buzzworthy newcomers, eclectic styles for any genre head to love, and not to mention, they’re all arriving from different corners of the world. Are you getting excited yet? In an effort to try and make this two week wait more bearable, we’ve got three fresh mixes from some artists on our talented roster. It may not be May 25th yet, but these sets will definitely get you through the weekend.
David Guetta
David Guetta DJ MIX #145
A quick glance on his Facebook page will put David Guetta in Dubai, Istanbul, and in the studio with Avicii and Nicky Romero all days within each other. Still going strong since 1988, Guetta continues his bi-weekly studio mix and here is #145.
Why We Love It
This is not your typical David Guetta. For those looking for a club that can handle you right now, keep looking. The hour mix is a continuous series of insane festival style drops and windups. Listening to it, we almost forgot we were working–which is always a bonus. Warning; may induce the desire to dance.
Markus Schulz
Global DJ Broadcast World Tour: Kuala Lampur
Just finishing up his “Scream” tour while simultaneously continuing his monthly world tour, Markus Schulz has been quite a busy man this year. This edition of the famous Global DJ Broadcast is live for the first time from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Why We Love It
The cheekily coined “Unicorn Slayer” nickname for Markus certainly earns its keep in this mix. From start to finish, the two hour set is packed with dark, dynamic energy. Even songs that seem to begin like the more uplifting trance style eventually get a dirty, pulsating re-fix. Hearing the crowd’s reaction to Markus is the icing on the cake. You can totally feel their energy and it makes you feel like you’re right there, experiencing it with them. Try and keep up. This one’s fast!
heRobust
Akomplice Mix
Teaming up with Akomplice Clothing, heRobust created a new mix of some of his current favorite releases.
Why We Love It
We immediately fell in love with this mix from the first track. Anyone who can mix out of Fiddler on the Roof’s “If I Were A Rich Man” and into a trap banger gets immediate cool points in our book. Weaving in and out of trap, electro house, hip-hop, and dubstep this mix is full of certified head-bobbing material. Play this for any of your friends–even if they aren’t dance music fans. Our bet is that there’s gonna be a lot of bootys bumpin’ and a lot of “OMG, did you just hear that drop? That was SICK!”
Sunset Music Festival Sound Mashup: Ferry Corsten and Krewella
Whether you want to have your spirits lifted by soft, sweeping trance strings, or you just want to get down and grimey to some dirty bass, Sunset Music Festival‘s lineup has got you covered. In this edition our sound mashup, we will dive into the sounds of trance legend Ferry Corsten, who just wants to rock your body rock and new bass-heavy kids on the block, Krewella, who just want to make you wet, one song at a time.
Ferry Corsten
Washing cars and selling mixtapes to save up for his first keyboard would eventually pay off for Dutch producer Ferry Corsten at 16 when he saw his first production release. Although Ferry’s music career would pick up by 1989, it wouldn’t be until 1999 that he would see his big break under the moniker System F with one of the most-classic, beloved dance tracks of all time, “Out of the Blue.”
In the same year, Ferry teamed up with fellow Dutchman Tiësto for the outfit, Gouryella. Only together for one year, the boys eventually parted ways to pursue solo projects. The year 2003 would finally see Ferry have his first release under the name Ferry Corsten with the album Right of Way, which featured hit singles “Rock Your Body Rock” and the more famously, “Punk.”
Ferry has been in the top 25 of DJ Mag’s Top 100 since 2001 and in that time, has established a label in Flashover Recordings, procured a radio show that is broadcast around the world with Corsten’s Countdown, and gained the title of dance music artist with the highest amount of singles to have gone gold in the United Kingdom. We can’t wait for the talented and decorated Ferry Corsten to join our newly annouced Isis stage for Sunset Music Festival. Buy your tickets to witness some new world punx today!
Krewella
Krewella is undeniably one of the hottest acts out right now. From their humble beginnings at underground raves in Chicago warehouses, the self-made trio, consisting of sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf and producer Kris “Rain Man” Trindl first burst onto the scene in 2011. Though the demand for their unique blend of electro house, dubstep, and captivating lyrics was high, it would skyrocket after they self-released their critically acclaimed Play Hard EP in the summer of 2012. The EP hit #1 on the Beatport charts and the single, “Alive” went to #1 on Billboard’s Dance Radio Airplay.
It hasn’t even been a year since the success of that EP but Krewella has gone on to headline and sell out shows and festivals around the globe. Having just recently been awarded the IDMA for “Best Breakthrough Artist,†we agree with Billboard who stated “Krewella will be huge this year.” With the group in the studio working hard on their debut long player due out on Columbia Records this summer, we sure hope Krewella performs some of their new tracks when they make us feel so alive at Sunset Music Festival. Buy your tickets to secure your spot as a member of the Krewlife!
Sunset Music Festival Artist Spotlight: Steve Aoki
Cakes in faces, bottles of Grey Goose, inflatable rafts and confetti cannons are just some of the things fans around the world have come to expect at a Steve Aoki show. We’re not sure what goodies he’ll bring for his performance at Sunset Music Festival, but what we do know is that the best way to see Steve is in person. So, have you bought your tickets yet?
Steve Aoki first started DJing under the moniker Kid Millionaire when he was a student at the University of California in Santa Barbara. There, Steve discovered his entrepreneurial spirit and began producing records and hosting concerts in his living room, calling the makeshift venue, the Pickle Patch. In 1996, now in his early 20s, Steve created the now world famous label Dim Mak Records, and 17 years later, he’s still partying strong.
Steve’s role as a producer has seen tracks like “I’m In The House” and “No Beef” have success on charts around the world. His work as a remixer spans from names like the Jackson 5, Lenny Kravitz, Kanye West, Eminem and Snoop Dogg. And with his knack for collaboration, he has worked artists like Kid Cudi, will.i.am, Afrojack, and Armand Van Helden. His label Dim Mak has hosted music by a variety of artists such as Dada Life, Zeds Dead, Datsik, and Tiësto, but is also credited for launching the careers of MSTRKRFT and Bloc Party, just to name a few.
Steve Aoki’s talents extend past music as was as his list of business ventures includes a clothing line, two restaurants and more recently, his own pair of headphones for SOL Repupublic. We’re sure you’ll see him don those headphones when he takes the stage at this year’s Sunset Music Festival. Buy your tickets today to get in on the cake-rafting good time!
