Sunset Music Festival Artist Spotlight: Shogun

Sunset Music Festival is right around the corner. And with the new world-class lineup additions on the devoted trance stage Isis, there are so many reasons to join us May 25th. What are you waiting for? Buy your tickets now! One of those new additions is internationally known producer, Shogun.

Naming himself after the Japanese word for warrior, Shogun’s (Andrew Chen) love for electronic music came softly. Although the American-born, Taiwanese artist was familiar with the certain elements of the genre from listening to bands like Nine Inch Nails and Filter, it wasn’t until 2002, after hearing Armin Van Buuren’s “Communication,” that Shogun submersed himself in trance music and began playing at local clubs. He started making a name for himself during his two year residency at the Ministry of Sound in Taiwan warming up for DJs like Tiësto and Paul Oakenfold. After his time in Taipei, he returned stateside to study audio engineering in Hollywood.

Often spending 12 hours in the studio, Shogun produced around 200 tracks in three years. His first single was signed by S107, sub-label to Armin van Buuren’s Armada, making him the first Asian-American to be signed to the prestigious imprint. His songs continued to gain attention being supported by the likes of Above & Beyond and fellow Sunsetters Ferry Corsten, and Markus Schulz. And it wouldn’t take long before “Imprisoned,” “Save Me,” “Run To My Rescue,” and “Skyfire” would become anthems and cement Shogun’s name in the catalogue of other heavyweights. More recently, originals “UFO,” “Amplify,” “Lotus” and remix of BT, Arty and Nadia Ali’s “Must Be The Love” have all smashed the charts and been championed sets by some of the world’s top trance DJs.
