The Gift Artist Profile: NERVO

artist nervoAustralian sisters Liv and Mim of NERVO certainly seem to have done it all. They are hit songwriters, producers and DJs whose skills have become a hot commodity for some of the world’s most popular artists. With their catchy lyrics and melodic electro-pop sound, these ladies are bridging a gap between the underground and Top 40.

Their monumental success in the music industry is certainly warranted given their early exposure to music. Born to Italian immigrants in the suburbs of Melbourne, the twin sisters engulfed themselves in all things musical. “Our parents were very nurturing,” Liv says. “Anything we wanted to do, they would make it happen.” “We had violin lessons, piano lessons, singing lessons,” Mim says. “We did classical singing. We always loved to sing. But it wasn’t an option to be a musician in our family. You had to work hard, study hard and be a lawyer or a doctor. Our dad is an endodontist. Music was seen as a hobby — a luxury.”

Turning that “hobby” to good use, after signing a contract with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, the duo made their songwriting careers a reality. Starting out in the mid-2000’s, Mim and Liv made a name for themselves by writing smash singles for artists like Ke$ha, the Pussycat Dolls, Miley Cyrus and Kylie Minogue. Their remixing efforts are equally as star-studded featuring superstars like Katy Perry and Cobra Starship. Their joint venture with David Guetta to co-write the Grammy-winning track “When Love Takes Over” would be a catalyst to their careers present day. Quickly building on that experience, the sisters began releasing music under their own name, NERVO. After working with artists like Afrojack, Steve Aoki and Nicky Romero on tracks like “The Way We See the World” and “Like Home,” the sheilas joined Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj for the Femme Fatale tour.

Always balancing a rigorous tour schedule with their songwriting/production and making their own music, the two are also label bosses at NERVO Records. “Music culture is what turns us on so we want to be at the forefront of that by finding artists and bringing out their best with NERVO Records,” Mim says.

Bringing new music to their monthly show NERVO Nation on SiriusXM’s BPM channel, the sisters consider spinning essential to honing in on the perfect sound. “Since we’re not spending all our time in the studio anymore, we get to play our records when we DJ and instantly see how the crowd reacts,” says Mim. “We’re always educating ourselves with that feedback. And those moments when people have their hands in the air and they’re loving the tunes–it’s one of the best rushes you can experience. It means everything to us.”

Currently celebrating the release of their collaboration “Revolution” with Ummet Ozcan and R3hab, out on Spinnin’ Records, get ready to be a part of the NERVO Nation when Liv and Mim make their way to The Gift, this Thursday, December 26th at Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium.

Winter Fantasy Artist Profile: Adventure Club

artist adventure clubWinter Fantasy duo Adventure Club have been rapidly ascending the dance music scene since they first got together in 2011. Hailing from Montréal, the duo of Leighton James and Christian Srigley formed while attending high school as a hardcore pop-punk band, but later decided to move onto the sounds of bass. Christian reflects, “Yeah, I [was] the one who was producing our band. We had a little studio and yeah, I probably was drunk the first time [I experimented with dubstep]. I had a field day just making dubstep and it was all just for fun — it ended up being a hobby until it started getting more attention than anything else we’d done previously.” The first song to put the duo on the map was their remix of Brand New’s song “Daisy” which increased their following exponentially after it was uploaded to the music aggregator site Hype Machine.

The duo developed a signature style that merged high-pitched female vocals with heavy drops to create their initial sound. Leighton remembers, “We were big into the hardcore scene and our friends showed us this remix album they had and Tech 1 did a remix of ‘Sleep with One Eye Open’ and it blended electronic and hardcore music together. We loved it so we started messing around with those kind of sounds.”

With a studio session early after their initial debut, the boys released a handful of tracks, catapulting them to fame. Remixes like “Crave You” or “Youth” by Foxes showcase Adventure Club’s characteristic blend of syncopated rhythms, emotional melodies coupled with emotive vocals, and smooth bass aligning each track. With their appreciation for sound dynamics and an ear for the perfect vocal, these two have not disappointed with their seamless work. Some of their signature sound can also be attributed to the software Cakewalk SONAR that they use to produce their music. Leighton says, “We kind of got tired of the wompy dubstep, and once we saw the melodic dubstep was working and people were being responsive to it, we just went with it.”

Currently buzzing from their release “Gold” and latest EP Calling All Heroes, come get your dose of adventure this Monday, December 30th as Adventure Club makes their way to the Rio Grande Valley for Winter Fantasy in Hidalgo, TX at the State Farm Arena. There’s still time to buy your tickets online!

Dr. Bob's Sonic Workshop Presented by Something Wicked

October’s Something Wicked crowd of over 20,000 attendees did more than just dance the day and night away to great music. With a strategic partnership between The Bob Moog Foundation, Disco Donnie Presents, NightCulture, and Houston venue, Stereo Live, donations generated from Something Wicked ticket sales helped host a workshop to teach students at Cornelius Elementary in Houston about the science of sound through the magic of music this past October 21st.

Presented to the entire student body of 950 students, the workshop consisted of two parts: An interactive sonic experience and a 45-minute presentation of the science of sound. The workshop inspires creativity in students by education students by providing an introduction into the physics and science of electronic music.

“Dr. Bob’s Sonic Workshop is an especially rewarding way for Something Wicked to give back to Houston, because we can offer our strengths and expertise in electronic music to positively affect children’s lives. The goal of the workshop is simple — we want to help develop the creative abilities of the community’s children in a lasting manner,” said Disco Donnie Presents CEO and founder Donnie Estopinal.

Disco Donnie Presents and Something Wicked will continue to seek lasting partnerships around the city of Houston and the best part is that all you have to do to help out, is join us on the dance floor!
