Something Wicked Artist Profile: ATB

artist atbMore than 20 years ago, Something Wicked talent ATB began his career in Germany. Over the span of his legendary career, the trance heavyweight has toured the globe countless times, released eight studio albums (many of which are two discs and special editions) and has become a figurehead in the dance music community.

Born André Tannenberger, ATB decided to try his hand at music composition in 1992. His modest start-up equipment consisted of a computer and a small synthesizer. A local DJ let André use his recording studio to finish his first song. In the studio, ATB used the Sequential Pro One synthesizer, ultimately inspiring the title of a later project.

Dance music group Sequential One hit Germany in 1993 with their debut single “Let Me Hear You.” Following up with two other singles, André received a small financial boost and used the funds to create a mini-studio. Ironically, André learned about the art of mixing out of sheer curiosity, “My first gig in front of an audience was as a live act. I started playing as a DJ after a couple of live gigs, because I searched for a possibility to play more tracks than just the tracks I had programmed and prepared with my synthesizers.” Though the outfit gained popularity outside of their native Germany, Sequential One disbanded towards the late 90s leaving André free to create a new solo project.

The world was first introduced to the name ATB in 1998 with his debut release, “9pm (Till I Come),” included on the Movin’ Melodies album. “9pm (Till I Come)” is undeniably a quintessential track that has helped define the dance music as a whole. Topping music charts around the globe 1999, “9pm (Till I Come)” is widely regarded as the UK’s first trance #1 hit. With its distinctive pitch-bended guitar riff, the track solidified ATB’s position as a pioneer of the genre, “I started 20 years ago as a musician and I started touring the U.S. 15 years ago. EDM did not exist yet. Every year I did a tour, being on the road for four weeks in a tour bus and we did all the small cities from the East to West coast. We played small rock clubs and country clubs and we brought this music to the people.”

Since the success of his massive debut as ATB, this Wicked talent has gone on to give the world many more classic tracks like “Don’t Stop,” his remix of Olive’s 1996 hit “You’re Not Alone,” “Hold You” and “Ecstacy.” Despite his arsenal of hits, ATB isn’t one to rest on his laurels, “…when I saw that “9 PM.” entered the charts all around the globe, I was really happy to have had such a great start as a professional musician. But to work as a DJ is not just having one hit single. You have to work very hard every day to be constantly up to date with the current music, to always be able to offer the people new good tracks during your sets. There is so much creative output out there, the internet being a great factor in that.”

Currently, ATB is preparing his ninth studio album, Contact, hopefully due out later this year. “When I get back home from EDC I will be in the studio for five weeks and finish my album, hopefully. So, it’s coming out worldwide in the second half of this year. I have already finished 3 singles. It’s a double album and it’s amazing, I hope! I like it, but in the end everyone has to decide for themselves.”

ATB will make contact with Something Wicked at the Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, October 26th. Buy your tickets today to be a part of Houston’s premier Halloween event!

Something Wicked Sound Clash: ATB, Crizzly

October has arrived! You know what that means – Something Wicked is just a few weeks away. Have all you ghouls and goblins bought your tickets yet?

For October’s first Sound Clash, we are merging two extremely different Wicked talents. Though one is known for creating music that emotes to the listener and the other for creating music that makes the listener want to start twerking, we’re excited to have ATB and Crizzly take to the stage for Something Wicked 2013.

ATB

artist atbThough the world was introduced to ATB in 1998, André Tannenberger’s music history dates back to the late 80s in Germany with dance outfit Sequence One (SQ1). “I started performing as a live act under the name SQ1, but in the long run I was looking for possibilities to bring more variation into my performance.”

ATB’s debut track, “9PM (Till I Come),” included on the Movin’ Melodies album is widely regarded as the UK’s first trance #1 hit, it topped music charts around the globe. Creating a distinct pitch-bent guitar riff, the track is essential to any definitive dance music history timeline. Though the easily identifiable guitar sound became the trademark of ATB’s early hits.

But his sound has continued to evolve throughout the years. On ATB’s No Silence album, he incorporated a crossfade effect on each song, creating a false, dream-like sequence with nature sounds. Currently employing more vocals, varied soundscapes and soft pianos like on his Sunset Beach series. “I selected music that creates emotions and feelings to produce an atmosphere of sun, beach and of course beach party. I think every track on the compilation provides the perfect soundtrack to such beautiful summer moments and I hope that people will feel the same way when they listen to it.”

On stage is when ATB comes alive, “That’s why I started to perform as a DJ. It offers me the opportunity to be fancy-free when I perform, not being bound to just my own music. And, what is most important for me, I have much more of a chance to get in touch with the audience and to adjust the music to the moment.” We can’t wait to get fancy-free with ATB when he performs at Something Wicked on Saturday, October 26th in Houston, TX. Crizzly

artist crizzlyWicked talent and San Antonio native Christopher Marshall may not have stumbled on dance music until he was 19, but his output of music more than makes up for his absence. After only producing for a few years, Crizzly passed out his music on USB drives to some of his favorite artists at Electric Daisy Carnival in 2011 – who were also some of the industry’s biggest names as well, “I made it a mission to pass them out to my favorite producers. I was nervous, but I gave it to Diplo. He listened, and now he plays ‘Hard in Da Paint’ in his set.”

Nicknamed by his fans as the crunkmaster, Crizzly is known for signature sound, “crunkstep,” which blends dubstep and hip hop to create his vivacious style. Crizzly describes it best in an interview, “It’s definitely a mixture of two different worlds, dance music and hip-hop,” he goes on. “People can connect because there’s a lot going on, and there’s more than one dimension. The audience responds immediately too. Since there’s a half-time feel, the blend just makes sense. It feels right to me.”

So when Crizzly joins us at Something Wicked on Saturday, October 26th in Houston, TX, expect some hard energetic tracks that are perfect for twerking and of course, getting crunk. Buy your tickets today!

Something Wicked Artist Profile: Alex Young

artist alex youngMost 16-year-olds are prepping for the SATs and just starting to think about what they want to do with the rest of their lives. But Something Wicked artist Alex Young is nothing like “most” 16-year-olds.

Native to the suburbs of Washington D.C., Alex began making music in 2011. “I was doing the thing all the DJs do before DJing – I was in a band and I was like playing guitar and stuff. But two years ago, I was taking recording classes and mixing/audio classes at this music school a mile from my house and I heard a Skrillex record or something and was like, ‘woah this is insane.’ At the same time I think I heard Skrillex the first week I was at the school taking DJ classes because my mom was like, ‘you have done the audio engineering thing too much and the band thing too much so why don’t you try something new?’ And I was like, ‘but mom Djing is so lame!’ So I took it and at first I was skeptical about, it but then I was like, ‘wow this is insane- this is so cool!’ That week, I started producing and Djing, so I wasn’t Djing before I was producing and I wasn’t producing before I was DJing.”

We first fell in love with Alex when his track “Boomerang” was mixed in by trap heavyweights Flosstradamus on their Banned mixtape series, “…yeah that was super cool getting on the Banned 2 mixtape because you know, they kind of innovated the entire hip-hop, rap, instrumental, trap like scene.” With his blend of glossy electro, house, and hip hop, Alex has earned the support of artists like Skrillex, Diplo, Dillon Francis, Kill The Noise, Flosstradamus, 12th Planet, RL Grime and Baauer. “Honestly, my style is very hip hop-influenced, but I try to fuse that with electronic music,” he goes on. “I’m trying to create the perfect balance between hard-hitting and melodic songs.”

Since his debut to the world, he has gone on to release a number of tracks like “Outrage” and more recently, “Mastermind.” Venturing away from his bass beginnings, “Mastermind” is a monster progressive track, showing off the young prodigy’s versatility between multiple genres. But if you ask him, age ain’t nothing but a number, “Many people can’t believe how old I am, however, that’s not what’s important. I want to make music that leaves a lasting impression and is remembered for years to come.”

Though this Wicked talent is too young to even to attend half of those places he’s playing at, his music has a great energy that will bring any club-goer to their feet. With an EP due out later this year, we’re are excited to welcome Alex Young to the Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, TX for Something Wicked on Saturday, October 26th. Don’t miss out on your chance to be a part of the ghoulish fun – buy your tickets today!

Something Wicked Weekend Warriors: Arnej, Ryan Hemsworth, Cosmic Gate

The weekend is here! Break out the cold drinks, hang out with friends and whatever you do, don’t think about work or school. Saturday, October 26th will include all of that and then some, as Houston’s premier Halloween event, Something Wicked returns to the Sam Houston Race Park. Have you bought your tickets yet?

Before we get down, here are three mixes from our Wicked roster to get you pumped for the upcoming event.

Arnej – ASOT600 Mumbai

Any trance fan will tell you that A State of Trance is one of the most, if not the most-anticipated events for the genre. This year, Arnej joined the all-star lineup for the world famous ASOT 600 in Mumbai.

Arnej’s set starts of with an intro version of “Adagio,” creating a wafting space for the crowd. You can feel the tension and energy mount as he dives into a collection of tracks that deliver on that same driving innovation that made the event (and its empire) so popular in the first place.

Ryan Hemsworth – Koalas & Echidnas (Triple J Friday Mix)

The Triple J mix show is one of Australia’s most notable radio exports. Reading the list of past guests reads like a who’s who of dance music heavy hitters. Something Wicked artist Ryan Hemsworth provided his talents to the revered brand.

The Koala and Enchidnas mix is what we’ve come to know and love about Ryan Hemsworth. Starting off with a cover of Ciara, the mix features a heavy dose of some of Ryan’s own edits, demos and remixes.

Dancing Astronaut presents Axis Episode 071: Mixed by Cosmic Gate

German trance outfit Cosmic Gate provided their skills on Dancing Astronaut’s 71st episode of their radio show Axis.

Combining main stage energy with an uplifting trance foundation, the 12 track mix features music from a variety of artists and genres including “What We Did” from Vitodito & Daga, Mat Zo’s “Pyramid Scheme” and remixes of their own productions, “Crushed” and “Storm Chaser” by Rafael Frost and KhomHa.

Something Wicked Sound Clash: Cyril Hahn, Henry Krinkle

As Something Wicked inches closer, we want to know, who’s ready to feed their devilish side? If you’re feeling wicked, come celebrate the Hallows Eve at the Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, October 26th in Houston, TX. Buy your tickets today and save!

For today’s Sound Clash, we are actually merging two friends. Both Cyril Hahn and Henry Krinkle have been making waves in dance music as of late and are currently on a North American Tour. We can’t wait to see what sounds these two have in store for us – no matter just how different those two sounds may be.

Cyril Hahn

artist cyril hahnCyril Hahn started turning heads in 2012 with his sensational rework of Destiny’s Child’s “Say My Name.” With down-pitched vocals and emotive synths, the Swiss-born Vancouver resident has racked in over two million plays on Soundcloud for the release, appealing to both the house and bass heads. Surprisingly enough, however, Cyril is new to the production game. “I only started producing electronic music this year and yes, it definitely feels sudden. I just started producing for fun and had no clue people were going to respond to the songs the way they did.”

With a crate filled with sexy, laid back originals and remixes, you’d think that his etheric melodies were made on vintage analog synths. “All I’ve used for my song[s] so far is a laptop and a midi keyboard. I think the warm sound comes from using a lot of vintage synthesizer sounds, but also the use of white noise/field recordings. I always liked the lo-fi aesthetic of the records I grew up with. Background noise or white noise was never something that bothered me on a recording. I think noise gives a song more character, a certain organic quality. That’s why I often include white noise or field recordings in my production. I don’t want my song to sound too sterile or mechanical. White noise is definitely a way to work against that.”

Currently preparing for the release of his Perfect Form EP due out October 7th, we’re excited to have this fresh new talent join Something Wicked on Saturday, October 26th. Buy your tickets today to save big!

Henry Krinkle

artist henry krinkleHenry Krinkle‘s music sounds like it came directly from the streets of the UK, but in fact, our Something Wicked talent is from Florida. Despite this, he has found great success in perfecting the sounds of UK post-dubstep (a term used to describe artists like James Blake and Mount Kimbie), bass and future house. Often titling his tracks as “lush house,” Henry Krinkle is creating an exciting new sound in today’s dance music.

Though the Florida born, Shanghai-based talent has been dropping beats since his days stateside, Henry Krinkle first grabbed our attention with his 2012 release “Stay.” The captivating track is rich in atmospheric textures keeping time with understated kick drum. Taking vocals from Alicia Keys’ “Unthinkable” to create the sample, the beauty of “Stay” is unmistakable, softly panning reverbed synths throughout the track. The icing on top is the way Krinkle contains the white noise to release it into a resonating sweep sure to put a smile on your face.

Known for his warm, refreshingly sexy house and bass productions that often incorporate reworked r&b vocals, Henry Krinkle has found the perfect formula for create catchy, ethereal tunes. We’re definitely ready to hear some lush house when Henry Krinkle makes his way to Something Wicked. Buy your tickets today!

Firebeatz

artist firebeatzThough Dutch duo Firebeatz have been storming Holland since 2008, 2012 solidified their global reach and fan ship. Their track “Just One More Time Baby,” with Chocolate Puma was a big hit on Beatport and received a massive endorsement from Pete Tong. Topping the Beatport House chart for weeks, they followed that with one of their biggest hits, a collaboration with rising talent Schella titled “Dear New York.” Incorporating a classic sample within a bass-heavy production, “Dear New York” gained massive DJ support and climbed Beatport’s Top 100 chart reaching the #2 position and remained a Beatport Top 10 track for weeks on end.

In 2013, Firebeatz kept churning out club bangers like “Gangster” and their collaboration with Bobby Burns called “Ding Dong,” released on Tiësto’s Musical Freedom imprint. Known for their progressive and techy influences, rhythmic melodies and grimy synths, their current offering, “Wicked,” is the perfect cumulation of all those elements. Teaming up with Schella once again, the track has that signature funky Firebeatz vibe with woven break beats, upright bass lines, groovy vocals and a thick electro drop. “Wicked” will definitely rock festivals around the world, including Something Wicked on Saturday, October 26th at the Sam Houston Race Park. Something Wicked Sound Clash: Aly & Fila, Adventure Club

We are your friends. You’ll never be alone again – especially if you make your way to Something Wicked in Houston, TX on Saturday, October 26th. Tickets are on-sale; have you bought yours?

For this edition of the Something Wicked Sound Clash, it’s all about friends. And who better to put two sounds under the microscope than friendly, freakish duos Aly & Fila and Adventure Club. Though one is known for their uplifting melodies and the other for the infectious “clubstep,” there’s no denying the energetic sound that will be pumping on the dance floor when both acts perform at the Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, October 26th – no matter just how different those two sounds may be.

Aly & Fila

artist aly and filaAfter falling in love with the music of legends such as Paul van Dyk, Chicane and Armin van Buuren, lifelong Egyptian friends Aly and Fadi, or Fila if you will, decided to pursue their passion of music by trying their hands at the music industry. They first burst onto the international clubbing scene with their massive hit “Eye of Horus” back in 2003. Their euphoric, uplifting blend of trance has seen them gain notoriety around the world. Fadi describes the formula for their unique sound, “It has two sides. 1. It’s very melodic. We always make sure we compose a really strong melody. 2. We mix it with strong beats and bass line. Not to dreamy, just a good balance between melodic and banging! I think that’s the special thing about our sound.”

Launching in 2006, their radio show Future Sound of Egypt has helped catapult the duo to the front lines of the today’s trance movement. Their label of the same name, often abbreviated to FSOE Recordings, is under the respected Armada umbrella and is also responsible for jump-starting the careers of Arctic Moon, Bjorn Akesson, Brave and Tonny Nesse.

Currently celebrating the release of their album Quiet Storm, we can’t wait to see what Aly & Fila bring to the table when they share their uplifting beats at Something Wicked. Buy your tickets today and secure your spot for the celebration.

Adventure Club

artist adventure clubThe Québécois duo of Adventure Club have a certain knack for creating great bass music. Though the two friends originally met while attending high school in Montréal and forming a hardcore pop-punk band, they have since flourished in the sounds of dubstep, and we’re so glad they did!

They first started making waves in the industry with tracks like their remix of Brand New’s “Daisy” which gave them heavy exposure on popular music aggregator site, The Hype Machine. Gaining a near-immediate following for their melodic song structures and more notably for their love of free music, Christian Srigley and Leighton Callou have established a devoted following since their initial inception just two years ago. Whether they are performing on stage or in a mix like their recent Superheros Anonymous Volume 3, their sound flows between their many influences of electro house, dubstep, drumstep, and trap, all the while, keeping their melodic Clubstep sound for the masses. Some of their signature sound is credited to the program that they use to produce their music called Cakewalk SONAR, separating them from the pack.

Having just premiered their track “Gold” on Billboard, the boys are definitely having a stellar year. Always managing to keep a comedic approach to it all, you can catch Adventure Club when they make their way to the Hallows Eve event on Saturday, October 26th.
