AWOL Sun Sound Clash: Arty, Lee Foss

We’re serving up some vibes on this edition of our AWOL Sun sound clash. Representing Russia and Chicago, we’re putting two of our talented acts under the microscope. Though one creates some emotive masterpieces and the other, his own ní®che in every aspect of house, we’re looking forward to some great sets on the shores of Cabo San Lucas when Arty and Lee Foss take to the stage October 10-13th — no matter how different those two sounds may be.

Arty

artist artyAt the bright young age of 23, Arty has already been viewed as the future of dance music by both media and artists alike. Gaining a devoted following with his original productions, Arty has masterfully blended elements of house and trance to create a sound that can be well-received by all. His music often gets lumped into three genres: trance, progressive house, and electro house. Arty’s passion is in progressive house because it “makes people dance.”

Arty first came to our attention in 2009 when tracks like “Get On,” “Gentle Touch,” and “Logic Symphony” were early successes. The young Russian was almost immediately scooped up by Anjunabeats after those releases and it has been great partnership ever since. In 2011, tracks like “Zara,” “Kate” and “Around The World” were played by everyone from Above & Beyond and Tiësto to Swedish House Mafia and Chuckie. Arty’s remix of Ferry Corsten’s “Punk” was also one of the most popular dance tracks in that same year.

Loved for his ability to create emotive masterpieces throughout the course of his four-year career, we’re thrilled to have Arty join us for AWOL Sun 2013. There are only a limited number of rooms left, so book yours today to be a part of the fun in Cabo San Lucas on October 10-13th.

Lee Foss

artist lee fossLee Foss is one of the most exciting artists in today’s house music scene right now. Born in Chicago, Lee found his home in the clubs and raves of the late 90’s – a formidable experience that ignited his interest in disco and house music. In 2001, Lee met Jamie Jones in Ibiza, and that friendship would turn into their highly acclaimed imprint, Hot Creations, which is arguably one of the world’s most innovative house labels.

Whether it’s been his knowledgeable approach to DJing or his pioneering take on nu-school house and synth-laden techno, Lee is a globally recognized artist. His unique sound blossoms from a lifelong love of the early days of house, 90s hip hop, 80s electro and Detroit techno. That love is backed by a string of successful releases (on a variety of labels) like The Edge and Starfruit EPs. Tracks like “Equilibrium,” “U Got Me” have each h been awarded “Tune of the Month” in editions of Mixmag at various points. Recently joining house legend MK and vocalist Anabel Englund to form the outfit Pleasure State, the trio’s debut EP Electricity had Pete Tong announcing the title track as his “Essential New Tune” earlier this year.

Currently celebrating the brand new release of Hot Natured’s debut long player Different Sides Of The Sun, Lee Foss is quite a wanted man. Dividing his time between homes in Los Angeles and London, we’re excited he’s set to join us on vacation to Cabo San Lucas for AWOL Sun 2013 on October 10-13th. We have no doubt that we will truly see different sides of the sun when Lee Foss takes the decks. Space is running out, so book your room today!

AWOL Sun Weekend Happy Hour with Arty

Welcome weekend! We missed you so! Bring on the sun and the brief bit of clarity before Monday comes back once again (with the ill behavior). Though your vacation with AWOL Sun in Cabo San Lucas is what you’re really looking forward to, you need to relax in the real world.

For this edition of AWOL Sun’s Happy Hour, we’ll be pairing a “Russian” with a Russian. So sit back and relax. Forget the stress of day-to-day life with a beverage and some great music – because sometimes, that’s really all you need.

Oh, and don’t forget – AWOL Sun sold out well over a month in advance last year, so be sure to reserve your four-night experience soon!

Arty – Together We Are Episode 55

Every Saturday on Sirius XM’s Electric Area channel, Arty hosts his hour-long Together We Are radio show. The genres usually fluctuate and on this episode, it’s no different. Starting off a little dub with Andrew Bayer’s “Detuned,” the mix has the perfect balance of soft melodic strings and edgy, glitchy effects, like seen in Arston’s remix of Arty‘s “Grand Finale.” Later on in the mix, the Russian talent gets a little deep with Beckwith’s “Back to Love” and Eli & Fur’s “You’re So High.” Then the episode ends on a 90’s tribal house feel.

We love the range of this particular episode of Together We Are. It has a little something for everybody which is perfect for long car rides with friends! We’re thrilled to get the opportunity to go on vacation with this talent October 10-13th. Time is running out, book your room today to start planning your vacation.

  • 1-1/2 ounces Coffee Liqueur
  • 3/4 ounce Heavy Whipping Cream

Fill a shaker three-fourths full with ice. Add the vodka, rum, coffee liqueur and cream; cover and shake for 10-15 seconds or until condensation forms on outside of shaker. Strain into glass if desired or serve over ice. Serves 1.

AWOL Sun Artist Profile: Arty

artist artyAt the bright young age of 23, Arty‘s knowledge of creating music that connects thousands far exceeds his years. Often viewed as the future of dance music by both media and artists alike, Artem Stolyarov has garnered a devoted following with his original productions, cleverly blending house and trance.

Although Arty completed his studies with a degree in mathematical science, his parents encouraged him to put his efforts into music. The year he burst onto the scene, tracks like “Get On,” “Gentle Touch,” and “Logic Symphony” were early successes and the young Russian was rightfully scooped up by the revered imprint Anjunabeats. “I finished my first record Rush in summer 2009 and it didn’t get signed until early 2010. I couldn’t find a label for a long time — nobody liked it. But then Anjunabeats picked up on the track and it was the beginning of a great relationship.”

Great relationship is an understatement. In 2011, tracks like “Zara,” “Kate” and “Around The World” were played by everyone from Above & Beyond and Tiësto to Swedish House Mafia and Chuckie. Arty’s remix of Ferry Corsten’s “Punk” was easily one of the most popular dance tracks in that same year. Instantly flying up the Beatport trance chart right after its release, it stayed there for over a year. Beatport named it the Best Trance Track of 2011.

Since then, Arty’s success has risen to dizzying heights. This year has been no different. His single “Together We Are” with Chris James is quite possibly the best example of how Arty is able to make an “emotional connection across a field of thousands” (Billboard). His SiriusXM radio show of the same name delves further into his ability to emote to a wide audience. Featuring an eclectic catalogue of smashes and the rising acts Arty admires, the radio show is just another way for this artist to bring people together. With a knack to create endless masterpieces throughout the course of his four-year career, the future for Arty can only get brighter.

We’re thrilled to Arty join us for AWOL Sun 2013. Book your room today to be together in Cabo San Lucas on October 10-13th.

AWOL Sun Artist Profile: Rony Seikaly

artist rony seikalyInternational music sensation Rony Seikaly has made an astronomical rise in the DJ ranks recently. Over the past three years, the former NBA superstar, who ironically received the nickname “€œThe Spin Doctor”€ on the court, has released two EPs, a full-mix album, and now has his own radio show on Sirius/XM Electric Area called SugarFree. More than a decade since his last basketball game, Rony is becoming a regular on the dance music circuit, performing at some of the world’s biggest clubs including his residency in Ibizia.

Ronald Seikaly is not new to music or DJing. Born in Beirut and growing up in Athens, Greece, Rony has had a music room in every home he has lived in since the age of 14, which, coincidentally is the same year he began DJing. Being exposed to everything from the Police, Genesis, KISS and even classical music, Rony’s music room was his haven to play music for friends, parties, birthdays et cetera.

Spending six of the eleven seasons he played in the NBA with the Miami Heat, Rony’s teammates knew little about his love of music, teasing him for his “Euro” tastes and knack for disco and pop. Now retired from basketball, Rony can pursue the career he’s secretly admired all this time. “Sports will always be my love. But music will always be my passion.”

With friends often retreating to his “playroom” in Miami, Rony’s current music room is set up like a mellow, garage-sized lounge, with dim lighting and a mirrored Buddha perched high on a shelf. A faux bar actually holds CDJs and a mixer (not drinks) and the room is equipped with an often overlooked club-level sound system. This, of course, is a hot-spot for Rony and his cronies, and over the years, as more friends were exposed to his talents, the more he was encouraged to share his DJing skills and selection with the public. Finally convinced to perform out in 2008, Rony played to a crowd in Miami’s Mokai Nightclub, “It turned out to be an amazing night.”

As one might expect with his diverse musical background, Rony’s DJing style mirrors as such. With a deep-rooted knowledge of the music that has inspired him and influenced his unique style, house music legend Erick Morillo dubs his sound, “Rony Style.” Rony himself loosely defines his sound as “happy underground.” Utilizing a driving, uplifting, and energetic track selection, Rony’s body-shaking beats all figure seamlessly into his sets. “It’s underground in the sense that it’s not music you are going to hear on the radio; But it is also not music that is going to scare you away. It is happy, sexy club music.” Currently celebrating recent releases “Thanks For Everything” and “You Make Me Feel” with Jean Claude Ades, we are ready to hear some happy, sexy club music by “The Spin Doctor” when we go on vacation with Rony Seikaly on October 10-13th for AWOL Sun 2013 in Cabo San Lucas. AWOL Sun Weekend Happy Hour with Cajmere vs Green Velvet

Your work/school week is over. The weekend is finally here. And while you have this brief moment of freedom before Monday rolls back around, your vacation with AWOL Sun is what you’re really looking forward to. Need to relax? We’ve got just the thing.

For this edition of AWOL Sun’s Happy Hour, we’ll be pairing “Bermuda’s national drink” with a mix from one of our talented artists that will take us to la la land. Decompress from the stress of day-to-day life with a beverage and some great music – because sometimes, that’s really all you need.

Oh, and don’t forget – AWOL Sun sold out well over a month in advance last year, so be sure to reserve your four-night experience soon!

Cajmere vs Green Velvet – Cajmere Live from Kaballah Festival Brazil

Green Velvet, Cajmere, Curtis Jones – whatever you want to call him, there is a reason why this legendary DJ and producer still packs out shows all around the world after over 20 years. His Cajmere Records/Cajual label are synonymous with the rebirth of Chicago house and his Green Velvet moniker is synonymous with edgier techno.

This mix is has a perfect combination of Green Velvet’s techno-funk prowess as well as his deep house skills. We love how he dropped the rework of his hit song and cult anthem “Flash,” a track that Nicky Romero sampled not too long ago. When Green Velvet drops the classics, fans are never disappointed. Listen as the legend takes you on a journey…

AWOL Sun Sound Clash: Dillon Francis, Anthony Attalla

We’re serving up some home-grown talent on this edition of our AWOL Sun sound clash. Representing Los Angeles and Detroit we’re putting two of our talented acts under the microscope. Though one creates some moombah bangers and the other created his own ní®che in every aspect of house, we are looking forward to the great music that will be blasting through the speakers when Dillon Francis and Anthony Attalla take to the shores of Cabo San Lucas October 10-13th — no matter how different those two sounds may be.

Dillon Francis

artist dillon francisThough his first release was only three years ago, Los Angeles-based producer DJ Dillon Francis has seen a rapid rise to fame with a series of successful releases and a little help from endorsements by Diplo. The two eventually collaborated on the massive-hit, “Que Que,” cementing Dillon’s presence in today’s dance music scene. Known for being one of the pioneers of the sub-genre moombahton, in 2012 Francis became the first moombahton artist to achieve the number-one spot on Beatport’s Top 5 Releases Chart with the release of his Something, Something, Awesome EP. While Dillon has made a few viral videos in recent months, it is his blend of moombahcore/moombahton, electro house, trap, and dubstep that keeps us clamoring for more. If you’re ready to get poppin’ and sweatin’ with Dillon Francis, then join us for the 4th annual AWOL Sun. Rooms are almost completely sold out, so be sure to reserve your entry to the vacation of a lifetime and book your room today!

Anthony Attalla

artist anthony attallaIn the few short years of his budding career, Detroit-native producing DJ and AWOL mainstay Anthony Attalla has scored residencies at world renowned clubs, seen his imprint rise to one of the most respected labels, and has become a highly in-demand artist for bookings all around the globe. As an artist, Anthony has charted over 40 Top 100 tracks on Beatport on labels such as Great Stuff, Trapez, Definitive, Tronic and Stereo Recordings. As a Businessperson, Anthony created a platform to showcase his favorite talent through his music production-company, Incorrect Music.
As a DJ, Anthony says, “When I perform it is truly the only time I can just forget about the world and lose myself. It’s almost like I disappear for a few hours and go to a different dimension or universe where I’m oblivious to everything besides my connection to the crowd and my set.”

Showing a penchant for techno infused tracks with a healthy dose of deep house rhythms, Anthony has become one of biggest tastemakers in an increasingly demanding industry. As Anthony continues to evolve, he continues to make his indelible mark on the dance music scene. We can’t wait to go on vacation with Anthony Attalla for another year of AWOL Sun. It’s Saturday. You’ve had a very long and tired work/school week, and your vacation on with AWOL Sun seems close, but so far away. Need to relax? We’ve got you covered.

As we count down the weeks until the 4th annual AWOL Sun in Cabo San Lucas, every Friday we’ll be pairing a refreshing cocktail with a track or mix from one of our talented acts. Dillon Francis – Diplo and Friends BBC RADIO 1Xtra

With ‘Summer Vibez’ in the title of this mix, what more can we ask for? Once again, Dillon delivers a perfectly blended mix that gets you moving right from the get-go. First off, he goes through an entire moombah segment, reminding us why we love moombahton. Then he glides into a harder jump-up style later in his set, using some of the newer and softer sounds we’ve heard coming from him lately. This set is solid all the way through. Tune in and chill out.

AWOL Sun Artist Profile: A-Trak

artist a-trakAnother Way Of Life: Sun artist A-Trak has been making quite the name for himself from a very early age. Unlike most boys at the age of 13, Alain Macklovitch was in his parent’s Montréal basement mastering the art of scratching and mixing on the turntables he bought with his Bar Mitzvah money. Hard work would soon pay off when he won the DMC World DJ Championship in 1997 at the tender age of 15 – making him the youngest DJ ever to do so. After winning the “World Series” of DJing, he was asked to join the prestigious, but now defunct Invisibl Skratch Piklz, whose members included heavyweights like as Mixmaster Mike and DJ Q-Bert. By the time Alain retired from the competitive DJ scene at 18, he had five world championships under his belt and was ready to expand his musical range.

In 2004, Kanye West recruited Alain as his personal tour DJ. Working with Kanye very closely, Alain performed at MTV specials, the Grammy Awards, multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and worldwide stadium shows. Alain also recorded scratches on Kanye West’s second and third studio albums Late Registration in 2005 and Graduation in 2007. During these years, Alain also released his acclaimed autobiographical DVD in 2006 called Sunglasses Is A Must.

With his career moving with great momentum, another project began to take shape. “I had an indie hip-hop label with my brother Dave called Audio Research. Then my brother started Chromeo and starting touring, and I got the Kanye gig. We were just doing a lot of stuff and not really putting out records. Around 2005 or so, the music that I was playing as a DJ was gravitating more toward this whole movement in the Northeast in the States, where a bunch of the DJs were playing a mishmash of different genres–everything that was club-friendly and uptempo.” Utilizing the idea of genre bending, Alain began to delve further into the project. “…I met Nick Catchdubs and we forged this friendship that was based around sharing music and talking about music. We had a lot of questions, like, ‘Why is this guy working with this producer? He should work with this other guy!’ and ‘What if this record had artwork by this guy?’ What ended up being the catalyst was when I started making music with Kid Sister, which was also when I started experimenting with my own production. Pretty quickly we had this single of hers that was ready to be pressed up. But we didn’t know which label to release it on. That’s when we decided to start this label together.”

That label is of course, Fool’s Gold Records. Bridging the hip-hop and dance music worlds together, the imprint has introduced us to artists like Kid Sister, Kid Cudi and A-Trak’s side project with Armand Van Helden, Duck Sauce. Called an “indie innovator” by Billboard and a “tastemaker label by the New York Times, Fool’s Gold Records is one of the most respected imprints in dance music today. We are so excited to have A-Trak joining us for this year’s AWOL Sun in Cabo San Lucas. You can witness the master turntablist at work this October 10-13th, but there are only a few spots left, so book your room today!
