We think it’s pretty amazing that some of the artists gracing Sunset Music Festival‘s lineup have helped pioneer trends within the music industry. With one artist perfecting the art of being an underground DJ with crossover hits and the other aiding in the birth of a popular sub-genre, David Guetta and Dillon Francis are two Sunset artists who have successfully pushed the envelop for dance music in the span of their careers.

David Guetta certainly needs no introduction. That’s because he is uniquely an underground DJ who has also gained huge crossover success. Often called the hardest working man in dance music, David Guetta has single handedly been crafting his career since the mid-eighties, diligently and steadily working to the spotlight position he’s in today. With five successful studio albums and multiple Grammy Award wins and nominations to boot, Guetta is known to billions for not only his fusion of pop and hip-hop in the studio, but also his energetic DJ sets which range from deep, epic-long forays into vocal house to funky, electro house bangers. Dillon Francis

Though his first release was only three years ago, Dillon Francis has since risen to fame with a little help from endorsements by Diplo and the track track the two eventually collaborated on, “Que Que.” Known for being one of the pioneers of the sub-genre moombahton, in 2012 Francis became the first moombahton artist to achieve the number-one spot on Beatport’s Top 5 Releases Chart with the release of his Something, Something, Awesome EP. While Dillon has made a few viral videos in recent months, it is his blend of moombahcore, moombahton, electro house, trap, and dubstep that keeps fans coming back for more. For the Egyptians, the sun represented light, warmth, and growth. So it is no wonder the sun god Ra was very important to the people, as the eye of Ra was seen as the ruler of all that was created. As Ra was one of the main deities of ancient Egypt, Ra will represent the main stage at Sunset and will feature David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Knife Party, Danny Avila, Krewella, and Morgan Page.

The Miami trio consisting of Danny D’Brito, Tony Livadas, and Anthony Pisano don’t look at themselves as a DJ group but rather as a band. Fusing their hard-hitting elements of house, electro, pop, nu disco, and even rock, the group is a relentless force of irresistible vocals, death defying drops, and innovative instrumentation. The boys first came together in 2009 when old-time band mates D’Brito and Livadas met Pisano and instantly formed a bond. One day, Pisano came into practice wearing a shirt with brass knuckles on it. The image just clicked for D’Brito saying, “I’m thrilled Anthony wore that shirt on that particular day. The name represents us so well. The music is often tough and in your face. It makes an impression.”

It wasn’t long before the trio would start creating original material as well as creating a lot of remixes. Their 2011 track “Lie to You” became the catalyst to their initial rise, making its way to dance floors and music blogs around the world. The success of the track also lead to a global tour through Asia and Europe. Ultimately though, it was Brass Knuckles’ debut release Bad Habits on the revered Ultra Recordings imprint that would thrust them into the spotlight.
