Something Wicked Artist Profile: Deorro

artist deorroAcquiring a taste for guitar and drums when he was growing up in Los Angeles, at the age of 14, Something Wicked artist Deorro started DJing at local gigs and house events. Formally known as Ton!c, Deorro turned his love for music into a career when he began to produce his own tracks.

Not long after he released his music on Soundcloud, Deorro began to garner a huge following. His music began to spread rapidly with releases like “Fire” and “Voodoo” having hit over one million downloads on the web. After this milestone, Deorro sold out two events in Australia, helping to solidify his position on the international DJ circuit.

Now 22 years old, Deorro has two sons and his dedication has turned into a remarkable lifestyle change for the better, “I never imagined it would be like this, traveling all days around the world. The thing that makes me very happy is that I can help my sons and my family. In my childhood, things were not very good but now that I have reach this success I think it’s time to give back to my parents and my people what they gave me. I’ll never stop working!”

With over 80,000 followers on Soundcloud, Deorro is one of the youngest international talents gracing the charts today. Dubbing his unique genre of electro house “Panda Funk,” Deorro’s EP Elevation reached the Beatport’s Top 20 electro house chart and even gained support from artists like Laidback Luke, Tiësto, Kaskade and Steve Aoki.

Although he’s released music on a variety of different labels like “Bounce” on Laidback Luke’s Mixmash Records, “Get Up” on Sidney Samson’s Rock The Houze Records and “Faster Horses” on Ultra Records, he’s also created his own label PandaFunk Records, an imprint showcasing his signature style.

Deorro’s music is a mixture of catchy melodies, big sweeps and hard breakdowns. Merging the two parts of his last name, the name Deorro is seemingly everywhere, releasing some top quality Dutch electro and progressive influenced bangers. But the styles that he’s influenced by don’t stop there. Still high off of his Elevation EP out on Dim Mak, Deorro seamlessly tied drumstep, house, dutch, trance, heavy electro, and even some moombahcore elements in the the release, expanding on a sound that is uniquely his own.

You can join the #PandaFam when he takes the stage on Saturday, October 26th for Houston’s Something Wicked. Tickets are still avialabel online, buy your tickets today!

Something Wicked Artist Profile: Aly & Fila

artist aly and filaThe Egyptian trance duo Aly & Fila were both born in 1981 and have known each other most of their lives. The Something Wicked duo built their first studio in 1999 where they began DJing and producing dance music. Full names Aly Amr Fathalah and Fadi Wassef Naguib, these two were initially inspired by the music of Paul Van Dyk, Steve Helstrip and Chicane. Fila says, “Actually, being born in Egypt, music is a very big thing growing up. Whether it is the oriental or Egyptian music, or the Western music. People love music in Egypt. It has a lot of meaning in the people’s lives. It was like that for Aly and me. We were growing up on music. Then we started listening to Western music when we were teenagers. People who would travel to Europe, we would get them to bring back CDs, since there was no Internet. It was very difficult to find out about electronic music. So all these people who would be coming back from Germany or England would be bringing us back CDs, so that is how we got exposed to that music.”

In 2003, Aly & Fila broke into the European market by signing with the German record label, Euphonic Records. Their first release “Eye of Hours” received the support from renowned artists like Armin Van Buuren, Tiësto and Paul Van Dyk. The track was eventually licensed to Fundamental Recordings and increased the boys’ exposure by climbing to the #4 position on the Dutch dance charts.

Subsequently launching their first label named Offshore after meeting Swiss producer Andy Prinz in 2009, they released their first single “Spirit of Ka,” which made its way onto numerous radio shows. The high-energy purveyors are no strangers to radio as the two host an internet show of their own every Monday called Future Sound of Egypt, showcasing their favorite upcoming talents from home.

Currently, the boys are celebrating their latest collaboration “Vapourize” with John O’Callaghan, which has already been deemed a Beatport “slam-dunk.” We can’t wait to hear the future sounds of Egypt when Aly & Fila take the stage on Saturday, October 26th for Something Wicked 2013. Volunteering is a great way to get involved while helping the festival community – and there are lots of benefits for doing it too! If and when you volunteer at Houston’s premier Halloween event, Something Wicked, you’ll receive access to the festival, learn about operations at a major festival event and meet other Wicked souls like yourself with similar interests. Something Wicked Artist Profile: Adventure Club

artist adventure clubSomething Wicked duo Adventure Club have been rapidly ascending the dance music scene since they first got together in 2011. Hailing from Montréal, the duo formed while attending high school as a hardcore pop-punk band, but later decided to move onto the sounds of bass. The first song to put the duo on the map was their remix of Brand New’s song “Daisy” which increased their following exponentially after it was uploaded to the music aggregator site Hype Machine.

Influenced by the sounds of Tiësto, Flux Pavilion and Skrillex, the duo developed a signature style that merges high-pitched female vocals with heavy drops. “We were big into the hardcore scene and our friends showed us this remix album they had and Tech 1 did a remix of ‘Sleep with One Eye Open’ and it blended electronic and hardcore music together. We loved it so we started messing around with those kind of sounds.”

With a studio session early after their initial debut, the boys released a handful of tracks, catapulting them to fame. Remixes like “Crave You” or “Youth” by Foxes showcase Adventure Club’s characteristic blend of syncopated rhythms, emotional melodies coupled with emotive vocals, and smooth bass aligning each track. Some of their signature sound can also be attributed to the software Cakewalk SONAR that they use to produce their music.

Currently buzzing from their latest release “Gold” featuring Yuna, come get your dose of adventure this Saturday, October 26th as Adventure Club makes their way to Houston’s Something Wicked. There’s still time to buy your tickets online!

Something Wicked Artist Profile: Sean Tyas

artist sean tyasA New York native now residing in Switzerland, Something Wicked artist Sean Tyas first burst on the scene in 2006 when Sander van Doorn selected him as the winner of the “Punk’d’ Remix Competition.” The Discover label later went on to sign up his early releases like “Lift” which grabbed the attention of many in the trance community.

As part of a new age of trance DJs, Sean has stood out among the rest by creating a recognizable trance style and sound. “Back in the late 90s, I started listening to sets from early Paul van Dyk, Tiësto, Ferry Corsten and Paul Oakenfold. I was previously into hardcore, gabber, jungle and drum and bass, so this was a huge change for me and a beautiful sound compared to the others. My all time biggest inspiration was Paul van Dyk. He began this specific type of trance and I don’t think anyone can deny that.”

With a pin point on his signature sound, Sean Tyas began to emerge as one of the most talented and in demand producers in the industry today, working with the likes of Armin van Buuren on “Intricacy” and requested remixer for “Suburban Train” for Tiësto, “Oceanic” for Above & Beyond and “Waiting’ for Dash Berlin.

Sean’s meteoric rise has been is reflected in various accolades such as being awarded “Best New Face” at the Trance Awards, “Best New DJs” slot on Mixmag’s list and also appearing on Beatport’s “One To Watch.”

Sean’s in demand sounds are backed by a genuine love for the music and a clear passion for his fans. Having toured the world performing at the most prestigious dance music festivals with his mixing style and a recognizable trance sound, we can’t to hear Sean’s intensely serene sounds when he takes the stage on Saturday, October 26th for Houston’s Something Wicked 2013. Something Wicked Artist Profile: Cookie Monsta

artist cookie monstaSomething Wicked artist Cookie Monsta represents the loud and grime side of bass music. Born and raised in Nottingham, the sound that comes from this producer and DJ has been described as a “demonic bass-saw that easily lacerates the ear drums.”

From a very early age, Tony Cook was always interested in music and video games. As a child, he spent hours on his brother’s Playstation creating sounds and making loops on Music 2000. Seeding his studies of music technology, Tony transitioned easily into music production, “I started to produce at college around October 2007 and it’s just evolved from there really. DJing then was in demand after people wanted me playing my songs at their clubs and now have been all over the world and I’m now hoping someone will put a rave on the moon!”

His barbaric basslines and grimy style quickly started to generate mass appeal and soon he received support from Flux Pavilion. Intrigued by Tony’s ability to create unique and mystifying noises, Flux invited him to join Circus Records. Not long after, Cookie Monsta was born, releasing his first single “Ginger Pubes/Blurgh!” and breaking into the world of bass.

His recent single “Come Find Me” featuring Flux Pavilion, is already clocking in over 200,000 plays on Soundcloud. An intense journey layerd with pristine vocals and unpredictable breaks, this track encapsulates Cookie Monsta’s unique sound. Tony’s love of music is deeply rooted, “If you’re passionate about making music and you know you want to make music then knuckle down and stay on it. If people doubt you carry on, no matter how bad things get. Music isn’t my hobby, it’s my life.” We couldn’t agree more. Come find Cookie Monsta on Saturday, October 26th at Something Wicked.
