Monster Block Party Artist Profile: Blue Sky Black Death

artist blue sky black deathBased out of Seattle, Monster Block Party duo Blue Sky Black Death have been making alluring productions for quite some time now. Though separately, members Kingston and Young God had respected careers as producers, after signing with Mush Records in 2005 the two originally joined forces to create an instrumental album.

Young God remembers the early days of the outfit, “We weren’t really working as a unit until a year, maybe two years before that album. Kingston was doing some production for some people, but I was mostly working by myself. The Mush thing was originally going to be just an instrumental album with a few vocal tracks. Then we decided that the vocal tracks wouldn’t have gone that well with the instrumental tracks, so it was, like, why don’t we just do a double album, because that’s bold and no one really does that [on their first album]. The guy from Mush was cool with it, so we just decided to do that.” Their debut, A Heap of Broken Images, was released in 2006 to an overwhelming amount of support. During the making of the album, the two decided to change their original moniker of Torso to their current name, which is a skydiving phrase alluding to beauty and death.

Seven years after A Heap of Broken Images, BSBD have released a seriously extensive amount of work. A quick read of their discography will find six hip-hop albums with rappers Nacho Picasso, Hell Razah, Jean Grae, and Holocaust, two instrumental albums, two electronic albums in Third Party and Slow Burning Lights and three mixtapes – we haven’t even mentioned their latest offering.

Having just been released on Fake Four on October 1st, Young God and Kingston are still celebrating the release of their the five-track instrumental album Glaciers. A cumulation of a decade’s worth of hip hop and instrumentalism, the album is rich in its ambient, shoegaze and subdued rock influences. With most of the tracks going past the 10-minute mark, Glaciers allows the listener to create their own imagery and get lost within the music. We hope the duo shares some of their latest efforts when they take the stage at the 12th St Pavilion for the annual Monster Block Party in Nashville this Saturday, October 26th. Tickets are going fast, so grab your today!

Monster Block Party Artist Profile: Sister Crayon

artist sister crayonThe music of Oakland-based outfit Monster Block Party talent Sister Crayon is an eclectic marriage of intensity and influences – and unabashedly so. Originally from Sacramento, their sound is saturated with trip-hop beats, soaring operatic vocals, distorted guitars and sonic textures that allow you to drift into the waves of the music. Previously performing under the name Silent and Clemintine, the band now consists of lead vocalist Terra Lopez and Dani Fernandez playing backing tracks. Sister Crayon was the result of a daring sound change for Lopez, “I didn’t want to be shy anymore and I wanted to have a name that was bolder and a completely different alter ego.”

Their debut album Bellow is the perfect example of how the group can create a deep intimacy between artist and audience. Lopez explains, “When I think of someone bellowing, I just see a sad, really powerful thing coming out of someone. Years of an exhausting type of feeling.” Recorded at the famous Hangar Studios in Sacramento, the poetic and mythological lyrics on Bellow have a way of relating to a wide array of people in a number of hopeless circumstances. “[Almost] all of the lyrics are mini-conversations to people [who] I could never really tell [things] face-to-face,” Lopez explains, “so the song’s going to be what I really want to tell you, though I may never tell you this was written for you.”

Sister Crayon spent last fall recording their EP Cynic released earlier this year in April. Like its predecessor, the five-track EP is a confessional piece, bringing personal topics to light for both members. “For me, writing is a form of therapy, because I can’t really afford it, to be honest. There are so many unresolved things, just in life in general, that I’m still trying to process. And the only way to really feel comfortable or okay about it is by singing every night. If we have a tough night or tough day beforehand, I’ll look forward to playing a show because it’s a huge form of some kind of release. And I know for me, if I don’t play a show, I start — if there’s too much of a time period in-between shows, I don’t feel okay; I don’t feel normal. Something’s missing.”

The EP was finished over the course of a weekend and during the last day of recording, Lopez, Fernandez and their producer Wes Jones wrote and recorded the song “Meager Leavings” in one sitting. Using an experimental session with vintage synths and a variety of drum machines, both Lopez and Fernandez felt they had discovered the sound they were looking for all along. With the release of Cynic, Sister Crayon have begun writing new material for their second full-length, set to be released in late 2013. Don’t miss Sister Crayon at Monster Block Party in Nashville this Saturday, October 26th. Secure your spot to the spooktacular.

Monster Block Party Artist Profile: Garmiani

artist garmianiSwedish DJ and producer Garmiani is far from a new fling in the music industry. Though he’s gone by different aliases, the Stockholm-based musician has been involved with music his entire life having promoted clubs, toured as a live performing artist, worked at major record labels Sony and Universal, has won music awards and has held #1 chart positions. So why the rebirth? With love for a new sound, he decided it was time to take his music in a different direction – this time using his real name.

Born Jiar Garmiani, in 2012 the Monster Block Party artist relaunched his career with the “debut” release “In Front Of Your Eyes.” Combining emotional vocals and melodies with an electric high-energy drop, “In Front Of Your Eyes” was an instant hit, reaching #1 on Trackitdown’s Top 100 house chart. Garmiani followed the success of his debut with free download, “Now That We Found Love,” which was a hot edit to Heavy D and The Boyz’s classic 1991 anthem.

Starting 2013 out with a bang, Garmiani’s single “The City Is Mine” with Salvatore Ganacci was featured on the the iconic Marquee nightlife brandcompilation album and was supported by Markus Schulz, Gareth Emery and Avicii. It was followed by Garmiani’s remix of Arash & Sean Paul’s hit single “She Makes Me Go” which went #1 on the German Dance Chart.

This multi-aliased Swedish sensation likes to build you up and chill you out with his productions. His latest double A-side single “Rumble” & “Dance Motherfucker” was signed by Steve Aoki to his Dim Mak Records as soon as he heard them. The ground shaking EP, ‘Rumble’, was released in late May 2013.

His career has since skyrocketed to international levels after he gained the support from artists like David Guetta, Hardwell, Afrojack and obviously, Steve Aoki. His EP Rumble, released on Dim Mak Records, shows us how he likes to build his audience up and chill you out with his productions. His latest singles “Rumble” and “Dance Motherfucker” were signed by Steve Aoki to his Dim Mak imprint almost instantaneously. Now officially a part of the Dim Mak roster, Garmiani is powered by his need to release more banging singles. We can’t wait to watch Garmiani in front of our eyes when he performs in the gulch for Nashville’s Monster Block Party on October 26th. Grab your tickets today before it’s too late!
