Day After Sound Clash: Afrojack, Calvin Harris

Outside of ushering in a new year, we are equally as excited that The Day After Festival is just days away. Time is running out, so be sure to grab your tickets to the massive event to save big.

On this edition of our Day After Sound Clash, we are merging two artists who definitely have things under control. Though one is known for his dirty Dutch sound and the other for his ability to emote through any type of electronica, we’re excited to welcome Afrojack and Calvin Harris to Panama for The Day After Festival.

Afrojack

artist afrojackAfrojack is one of the biggest artists in the music game right now. The Dutchman made his debut in 2006 with the single “In Your Face” which scored #60 in the Dutch Top 100 and #3 in the Dutch Dance Top 30. A few years later, the budding talent started his now distinguished imprint Wall Recordings where he released a handful of his early hits like “Math” and “Drop Down (Do My Dance)” in 2008.

In 2010, Afrojack exploded with the release of “Take Over Control” with Eva Simmons. Filled with dirty synthesizers and a signature jackin’ house beat, the track was an instant worldwide club and chart hit and the record went platinum in the U.S. Success for the young artist has only continued to mount as his remixing efforts have been requested for a variety of artists including Michael Jackson, Avicii, PSY and even Donna Summer. Closing out 2013 with a bang, Afrojack’s latest efforts include a remix of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” and a fresh original with “The Spark.”

Known for his playful use of Latin-inspired drums, high-pitched melodies, and insatiable energy, this dirty Dutch pioneer is just getting started. Get ready to for Afrojack to take over control at Figali Plaza for The Day After Festival.

Calvin Harris

artist calvin harrisCalvin Harris was one of the most successful songwriters in the world this past year. But his massive success came from humble beginnings. The Grammy nominated Scot was first drawn to electronic music around 1999 and began to record a series of demos at home. His first two songs “Da Bongos” and “Brighter Days” came out a few years later under the moniker Stouffer. Though his follow up track “Let Me Know,” with vocalist Ayah had relative success, Harris’ debut album I Created Disco was when things started to really heat up.

Released in 2007, the album debuted at #8 on the UK Albums Chart and by the following year, it was certified gold. Audiences were immediately drawn to tracks like “Acceptable in the 80s” and “The Girls” for their synth-pop electro influences coupled with catchy lyrics and universal melodies. Over the years, Calvin Harris has amassed countless hits and has produced songs for some of the music industry’s most popular artists like Mary J. Blige, Ke$ha, and Rihanna. To add to his long list of accomplishments, Harris’ 2011 single, “Feel So Close,” was his first solo single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States – a feat many dance artists can only dream of! “It’s an emotional, almost an emo vocal,” Harris says, “I can’t remember the last time guitars were in dance music like that. Also, it’s all real instruments. Nothing’s fake there: it’s real music, real melody and actual emotion. A lot of dance music now, it’s about being in the club and popping bottles over this cheap-sounding synth that people can make so easily and get somebody else to mix. I’m not about that.”

Still buzzing from his massive remix of Fatboy Slim and Riva Starr’s “Eat, Sleep, Rave, Repeat,” Harris’ latest release of “Under Control” with Alesso and Hurts, proves Calvin Harris will surely have things under control when he takes the stage at Figali Plaza for The Day After Festival.

Anna Lunoe

artist anna lunoeThough the name Anna Lunoe may sound new for those of us on the Western Hemisphere, she has been blazing a trail on the Eastern hemisphere for quite some time now. The Aussie grew up in a household with many older brothers who assumed she wasn’t “cool” enough to like the music they were listening to. In an attempt to earn some cool points, Anna dug through the bargain bin of her local CD store until sundown. As a result, a young Anna had with an bizarre knowledge of 90s hip-hop, movie soundtracks and early experimental electronic music.

Making a name for herself as a host on Sydney station fBi Radio, Anna was always one step ahead of the game with an ear for what emerging sounds would be the the next big thing. As a result, Anna was named one of Sydney’s 100 Most Influential People.

Her productions, much like her regarded DJing technique, is a wide range of dance music genres. Her first release came out in 2011 with a disco-inspired collaboration with Wax Motif in “Love Ting.” The track was a club hit and championed everywhere from Australia’s revered Triple J to BBC Radio One. After trailblazing down under, Anna moved to Los Angeles to build her growing empire in 2012. Her 90s house influenced collaboration with Touch Sensitive “Real Talk” hit #1 on the Beatport Indie Club chart and stayed there for an unprecedented three months.

Though the tempos of her songs may fluctuate, the sound of Anna Lunoe remains a blend of house, garage, indie pop, and bass influences. Often adding her own distinct and delicate vocals, Anna adds a femininity to club music unlike any other. Celebrating her latest release “Breathe,” out on Fool’s Gold, get ride for a smooth ride when Anna Lunoe performs at The Day After Festival in Panamà.

Apster

artist apsterArmed with rolling drums and bouncy chords, Apster embodies everything the Dutch house music scene has to offer. With releases on labels like Spinnin’ Records, Wall Recordings and Dim Mak, Apster’s productions always leave fans wanting more.

Apster’s passion for music has been a long time coming, “I always was into music,” he says, “It started with hip hop and R&B. As I grew older, [when I was about 15 or 16 years old], my interest for EDM was began to grow on me and I started to play with a mix program on the computer called Atomixmp3 – that’s when I knew my dream was to become a big DJ.”

His first production, “King Selassie,” came out in 2008, but his remix with Joey Suki on the Bassjackers’ track “Enowapi” is what propelled Apster to an international spotlight. Artists like Laidback Luke, Erick Morillo and Roger Sanchez added the track to their crates which lead to an influx production requests for the young artist. Since then, his success has only multiplied as tracks like “Marrakech” and “Bucklekneez” have become global club anthems.

Known for his enticing melodic drops and deep, distorted basslines, Apster is a mainstay on Afrojack’s Jacked crew. Currently infecting all corners of the world with his massive electro sounds, prepare to be jacked when Apster makes his way to Panamà for The Day After Festival.

Day After Artist Profile: R3HAB

artist r3habOver the past few years, Day After Festival talent R3HAB has quickly become a reputable name within the dance music scene. His constant motivation and arsenal of productions have created a unique energy that keeps his international audience coming back for more.

Born Fadil El Ghoul, the Dutch native acquired a taste for electronic music when he was 17 years old, but his parents were adamant about a college education first and foremost. It wasn’t until after he received a degree in Commercial Economics that R3HAB could truly devote to his music career, “Yeah so I had to finish [university] for my mother and then I got back into music. Now I’m producing music full time. It’s awesome and it’s going really well. I thought it would be hard to make music full time because you have to get inspiration. It worked out pretty well though.” Worked out pretty well is big understatement.

Adopting the stage name of R3HAB, the talent burst onto the scene in late 2008 after producing “Mrkrstft” with fellow Dutchman and Day After Festival headliner Hardwell. The track became a huge club hit and R3HAB gained global support from fans and DJs alike. R3HAB quickly became one of the frontrunners of the Dutch house subgenre, alongside Afrojack and Chuckie, and was given the unofficial title as the most in-demand Dirty Dutch remixer. His skills have allowed him to work with artists like Madonna, LMFAO, Katy Perry, Jennifer Lopez, and Pitbull.

Since his debut, R3HAB has gone on to release a series banging tracks including his remix with Quintino on Tiësto’s “Chasing Summers,” “Pump The Party” with Ferruccio Salvo, and more recently, his efforts have shot up Beatport’s Top 10 with “Revolution,” a collaboration with Ummet Ozcan and NERVO.

Currently celebrating the premiere of the smasher “Flight” with Steve Aoki, get ready to pump the party with R3HAB at Panama’s Day After Festival on January 10-12th. Tickets are now available, purchase your tickets online today!
