Excision

Excision

The name itself presents a terrifying image- a mangled, forced extraction, quite literally “removal by cutting”. It should come as no surprise that the sounds behind this name are just as filthy, brutal, and unforgiving as the namesake suggests.

Excision shows are like no other- a virtual apocalypse of twisting and morphing sounds turn massive crowds into a frenzy, as virtual walls of bass are relentlessly impaled time and time again upon their fragile bodies and ears. Your ears will ring and your eyes will roll into the back of your head as you are suspended in what can only be called a true sensory overload. Bass will rain down from above for hours as Excision’s skills as a DJ and producer shine like an unholy light from the underworld.

The true champion of bass music, Excision hails from Kelowna, British Columbia. The founder of the ROTTUN label, a bass music conglomerate that has shaped the sound of modern Bass music, Excision has created a vast roster of allies that has only bolstered his spot as a warrior of bass music. Armed with a library of destruction and filth, Excision has time and time again tested the limits of electronic music with vastly different sets that encompass a full range of genres. The things you see and hear during the precious time you are engaged by Excision’s sounds will eclipse your mind for a lifetime, as you are constantly enlightened by the true fervor and energy that only an Excision set can provide.

Sasha

If there are boundaries yet to be broken, then you can bet that Sasha has got them in the crosshairs. He’s been battering them down since Shelley’s, The Hacienda, Renaissance, and Twilo; from Airdrawndagger to Invol3r. Since 2011, he’s carved a new way with his increasingly pivotal Last Night On Earth imprint, the label that has introduced into its family fiercely forward-thinking producers like My Favourite Robot’s James Teej, Simon Baker, ThermalBear, Ejeca, Ghosting Season, Max Cooper and Knox.

Then there was the arrival of the long-awaited third album in his ‘Involver’ series in 2013, the intricate and challenging ‘Involv3r’. It combined on one disc Sasha’s peerless command of dance floor sensibilities and on the other his skillful exploration of beatless soundscapes, featuring his exclusive interpretations of tracks from The xx, Blondes, Little Dragon, Benjamin Damage, Foals, and ThermalBear. It also featured ‘Shoot You Down’, his own spine-chilling anthem with vocals from the beguiling Swedish chanteuse Kicki Halmos.

Boundaries out of the studio have been equally unsafe. Taking over with his Last Night on Earth parties around the globe, Sasha has brought nothing but the finest line-ups to clubbers around the world. Last summer he hit the world-renowned Space Ibiza with a monthly LNOE residency, which showcased the likes of Scuba, Catz & Dogz, Heidi, Magda, and of course, Sasha himself. He also hosted his first festival arena with Last Night on Earth at SW4 in the capital last year.

It doesn’t stop here though. 2015 will see Sasha taking things to another level on and off the dance floor. Expect big things from his parties around the world, which he is running alongside his imprint label Last Night on Earth. In his own words, Sasha says, “We have some really exciting things planned for 2015, some great releases and I will be collaborating with some of the very talented artists we have championed.”

Galantis

On June 8th, Galantis released their debut album Pharmacy through Big Beat and Atlantic Records. With it, the duo of Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklöw realize their vision of bringing the craft of songwriting to modern dance music. Of course these 13 tracks are anthemic and transcendent, capable of lifting up any club or festival crowd, but at their heart they showcase two incredibly talented craftsmen who know what it takes to give a song depth and timelessness.

Pharmacy is an album about living a life with endless possibilities. It’s a feel good record, with a tinge of sadness, encouraging listeners to leave behind a less fulfilling existence. The emotions are genuine and the sound is huge.

The world first got a sense of what Galantis was capable of in 2014, after their singles “Smile” and “You” from their self-titled EP were embraced by massively influential DJs including Pete Tong, Diplo, Tïesto, Porter Robinson and Laidback Luke. Galantis introduced themselves as a powerful live act that spring with a spot at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival, instantly winning over both the fans and the press.

But the story of Galantis really began several years earlier through two of Karlsson and Eklöw’s other projects. In 2009, Karlsson’s band Miike Snow asked Eklöw, who produces and DJs as Style of Eye, to remix their song “Animal.” After that, the two Swedes started hanging out in the studio together, playing each other songs and scraps of ideas. Explaining what drew him to Eklöw, Karlsson says, “He’s an amazing programmer and designer of soundscapes. It was artsy, in a way. He was different.”

There were many unfinished ideas that the pair fiddled with and then abandoned, but it wasn’t until sometime in 2012 that things really came together, when they stopped the loop-based and software-centric approach common in modern dance music and switched to Karlsson’s usual method of beginning a song on guitar or piano. The duo figured out their own approach–once they create a foundation with a simple arrangement, they build it up with stirring keyboards, monumental drums, imploring vocals and inventive flourishes. “We keep the song naked, and when we feel like we have the right one, we put some clothes on it and see how it feels,” says Karlsson.

The first composition they agreed upon was “Smile.” After that, their direction became clear. “We felt the urge to fill the dance world up with songs and with songwriting. That created our sound,” says Eklöw.

“We realized, this is Galantis, this is our band,” Karlsson adds.
Of course, Karlsson has previously had enormous success as a songwriter and producer for other artists. Working as Bloodshy, over the past decade he has collaborated with global pop superheroes including Madonna, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry and Britney Spears, whose classic “Toxic” earned him a Grammy award. And though Eklöw’s releases as Style of Eye have mainly been on dance labels like Ultra, Dirtybird and Sound Pellegrino, he actually began his career in music as an assistant to a major pop music producer in Sweden, so Galantis is a bit of a return for him. Also, in the midst of the duo ramping up, Eklöw found mainstream success on his own after producing Icona Pop’s mega-smash, “I Love It.”

Galantis isn’t Karlsson and Eklöw smashing their talents together, it’s two artists blending what they already know in order to create something new. Karlsson may be the more recognized songwriter, and Eklöw may have more DJ experience to know what’s going to work on the dancefloor, but they don’t strictly divide the work this way. Each one experiments in the other’s area of expertise, then draws from his partner’s knowledge to get the best results.

For Pharmacy, that meant spending many hours in studios in Los Angeles and the recording space they built together on a tiny island on an archipelago just outside of Stockholm, Sweden. These long studio sessions have become normal for the pair over the years. “That where we’ve been, that’s where we are, that’s where we live,” says Karlsson. “There’s no other way for us.”

“Every day is different, but what’s always there is this feeling that we know what the other one is thinking,” says Eklöw of their collaborative relationship. “It’s a wordless communication. It’s almost like telepathy. You get it from being in the studio together for a long time, but we also share a lot of common interests in music.”

But don’t think that this obsessiveness drains the life from the music. Throughout these sessions both Karlsson and Eklöw were always dancing, jumping and screaming as the songs played. The fact that they shared this approach to making music is what made them realize they’d be great partners. “We are the same type of person in the studio,” says Karlsson. “It’s extremely high energy. We’re very intense when we’re creating, and finally I have someone who works like me.”

You can feel that energy in Pharmacy’s lead single “Runaway (U & I),” an ecstatic burst of dance pop escapism that has already become a beloved cut. But even such an instantly appealing song carries with it a level a complexity. Eklöw says it was one of the hardest compositions on the record to put together, as they had three different sets of vocals, existing in three different universes, which they then tweaked to create one greater sum.

Some of the ways that Pharmacy confounds what has become expected of dance music is even subtler. “In My Head” is based on a three-and-a-half bar loop, as opposed the standard four bar loop. The reason for this move is because it’s what the melody they came up with dictated, but the real challenge was to make the slight adjustment feel totally natural. Watch your feet and you can tell they succeeded.

While Galantis has found a sound that resonates with the modern dancefloor, they don’t intend to play it safe. Instead they will keep developing their sound and challenging listeners. They wanted Pharmacy to show the range in directions that this project could go to. Even the new single “Peanut Butter Jelly” is a bit of a departure for them. Using a sample from Bettye Swann, one of Karlsson’s favorite artists, and some heavily treated vocals, the song has the feel of an old soul disco record that has been sent on a warp speed journey to the future. As Karlsson says, “That was one of the destinations that we needed to go to.” And we’re ready to follow, from the farthest reaches of space to the deepest depths of the sea.

Borgore

A-Trak

At a time when the DJ sits firmly at the center of popular culture, A-Trak stands out as MVP, the key participant who holds together all facets of the craft. Very few share his mastery of turntablism while also sitting at the forefront of musical innovation, looking keenly to the future with history tucked in his back pocket. A true connector, Trizzy hops effortlessly from colossal festival stages to sold-out concert venues and sweaty underground clubs, building links between hip hop and electronic music while watching genre barriers crumble.

Kaskade

Having been through the trenches as an original recording artist, producer and in-demand DJ for more than a decade, American juggernaut Kaskade continues to be at the forefront of the dance music scene. Breaking down barriers and shattering records, he’s created a career of unprecedented milestones for himself and the industry: the first U.S. DJ to secure a Las Vegas residency, the first solo electronic dance artist to sell-out Barclays Center, as well as the first dance artist to sell-out Navy Pier and the Staples Center during his Freaks of Nature Tour, which was deemed “the only successful national stadium tour undertaken by a solo ‘EDM’ artist” by Billboard.

Most recently Kaskade returned to the iconic two-weekend Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for the fourth time, where he was the only electronic artist to take the main stage. In a historic achievement, Kaskade drew the two largest crowds the festival had ever seen in its storied sixteen-year existence.

Prior to kicking off Coachella, Kaskade released his much anticipated single, “Never Sleep Alone,” which premiered at #1 on Billboard’s Trending 140 chart and is currently on iTunes Top 10 dance chart. Poised to become this year’s summer anthem, it’s rooted in contemporary house music fused with an explosive energy fit for any massive arena or festival.

Crowned by The New York Times as “the new face of electronic dance music,” Kaskade has laid the groundwork for a titanic musical and cultural shift: a post-rock electronic music revolution that has captured the imagination of a new generation of fans across North America. He received his fourth consecutive Grammy nomination for Best Remixed Recording for his edit of Galantis’ “Smile.” Previously, his eighth studio album Atmosphere scored him his second and third Grammy nominations for Best Dance Recording and Best Dance/Electronica album. He received his first nomination for his double-album Fire & Ice, which debuted No. 1 on Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Album chart. With his unique creative prowess, the two-time “America’s Best DJ” title holder has created chart-topping remixes for everyone from Lana Del Rey to Beyoncé.

Along with taking the festival-circuit by storm, Kaskade performs to jam packed crowds all over the world at Wynn Las Vegas daylife and nightlife venues — Encore Beach Cub and XS Nightclub, where he has a multi-year exclusive residency deal. Wynn Las Vegas served as his first exclusive residency in Las Vegas at Encore Beach Club in 2010.

While he cut his teeth in nightclubs, today Kaskade’s live shows are arena-sized; a jaw-dropping spectacle that finds him performing in front of massive LED screens broadcasting evocative images synced with the music in meaning and tone, while strobe lights scan the crowd. “I’m trying to create an environment where you can lose yourself in these really big, grand, euphoric moments and to do that, there has to be a certain intensity. We’re barraged with so much information in modern-day culture, and I want people to forget their worries and cares and be able to come together and celebrate life by hearing these songs that they love, with words that have touched them in a certain way.
