Styles&Complete

Styles&Complete

Styles&Complete is a DJ and production duo. Alex Steins (Styles) and Austin Hains (DJ Complete) Started the duo in 2011 bringing together hip hop and electronic music. They started to gain notoriety after they released a remix to “No Flex Zone” by Rae Sremmurd in 2014. They have worked with artist such as G-Eazy Waka Flocka, Borgore, Lil Jon, Tavis Porter, Lil Flip, Ying Yang Twins, and more.

Brillz

With releases on staple electronic labels including OWSLA, MAD DECENT and SLOW ROAST RECORDS, as well as two, Top 10 albums on the iTunes dance charts, all within the span of a year; BRILLZ should be called the rookie MVP of the Bass Music game.

Turning heads with his trapped-out blend of hip-hop and EDM, Brillz’s interest in music stems from his history in the dance music scene. Introduced through the dance itself, Brillz was a founding member of a dance crew called Liquid Pop Collective before producing and DJing. The group would hold events on the East Coast, merging the dance styles of funk and hip-hop with the rave culture dance “Liquid”. As he progressed into production, these themes would carry through as a foundation of Brillz’s aesthetic.

After releasing a handful of tracks, it was a KILL THE NOISE’s “Roots” remix on SLOW ROAST RECORDS that really established him in the producer world. From there things took off. His next release was a two- track collaboration with DIPLO on MAD DECENT RECORDS. The EP featured the track “Swoop,” which was supported by a number of impactful DJs including SKRILLEX, KTN, 12th PLANET, A-TRAK, ZEDS DEAD, BASSNECTAR, FLOSSTRADAMUS, DILLON FRANCIS and many more.

A remix of ZEDD’s “Clarity” was his next hit. The track premiered with BBC RADIO 1XTRA — one of the UK’s most popular and cutting edge stations. Following the release, requests started piling up.

Soon after, BRILLZ made a bold move within the DJ scene — he released a full-length album. “I wanted to do a full-length,” explains BRILLZ. “I think like a painter or a fashion designer — I wanted to created a body of work and I wanted to make an impact.” The album was titled TWONK. What is TWONK? As BRILLZ so simply puts, “Twonk is a human weirdo, and twonk team is the movement of the weirdos. Twonk is about creativity, it’s about individuality, it’s about being weird… it’s about self expression.” The album broke into the Top 10 Dance chart on iTunes. The Twonk remix album, Re-Twonked, was released in December and landed in the Top 5 on the iTunes Dance Chart. The album featured remixes from BRO SAFARI & UFO, JACK BEATS, LOUDPVCK and more.

BRILLZ has also released a handful of remixes recently, including a remix of JAY-Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulders,” which was featured on JAY-Z’s blog Life and Times; a remix of JACK BEATS’ “About To Get Fresh,” which was released on OWSLA; and a remix of KILL THE NOIZE’s “Talk To Me.” While constantly working on new material, BRILLZ is on the road with dates all across Europe, confirmations at Ultra Music Festival, Sunset Festival and a bunch of US dates. 2014 will also see the launch of the TWONK clothing line.

tyDi

Establishing himself as a successful crossover artist, tyDi’s specific brand of music has garnered mass appeal. Playing over 150 shows a year and touring globally keep him busy, but when tyDi gets into the studio, magic happens.

The release of his fourth studio album, Redefined (2014), marked a major shift in the Australian producer, tyDi’s career. “After three years of writing, recording, composing and producing, this is a project that captures the absolute highest highs and the lowest lows of my personal life.” Showcasing his range as an artist, Redefined stands as an eclectic, honest, and creative reflection of who tyDi is as a producer, songwriter and DJ. “So much of my heart, blood, sweat and tears went into these 20 songs.”

A balance of raw lyrical storytelling and masterfully composed, technical music demonstrates tyDi’s attention to detail. As a conservatory trained musician, tyDi consistently draws on elements from genres beyond electronic music, utilizing organic orchestral strings, power guitar riffs or pop hooks. The album features a host of talented vocalists, including Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba, which tyDi refers to as “lifelong dream collaboration.” Appealing to global audiences, Redefined debuted in September 2014 at No. 4 on the U.S. iTunes Dance Chart and No. 5 on the Australian iTunes dance chart, while the album’s title track, ‘Redefined’ featuring Melanie Fontana garnered over 2 million Spotify streams and quickly became the Billboard No. 1 Dance Airplay record in the U.S., as well as the most played record of 2015 on SiriusXM BPM. Its success speaks to the quality of the music, pushing tyDi further into the mainstream spotlight.

No stranger to success, tyDi (born Tyson Illingworth) boasts a resume of accolades that reach far beyond sheer play counts. Beginning his musical career as a drummer in a high school rock band, the native Australian became so enamored by electronic music that he acquired a set of turntables at the age of 16 and by the age of 17, he was signed to Armin Van Buuren’s Armada label. Inspired by his love for music and learning, tyDi studied Music Technology at the prestigious Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He was recently named the University’s most outstanding graduate. Shortly after graduating, tyDi released his debut album, Look Closer (2009), which quickly claimed the No. 2 spot on the Australian dance charts. tyDi’s production and DJ prowess quickly gained international attention and he was named Australia’s No. 1 DJ for two years in a row. In 2010, tyDi won “Best Break-Through DJ” at the International Dance Music Awards (IDMA). Despite his massive success, tyDi stuck to his nature as an artist and continued to create. His aptly named second album Shooting Stars (2011) reached No. 1 on Australian, Canadian, Finnish and UK iTunes Dance charts and hit No. 4 in the U.S. On the heels of his second album’s success, tyDi signed a major publishing deal with Rondor/Universal Music and later a record deal with the notable Republic Records.

Balancing his global tour schedule and making music, tyDi finds time to write and compose his music on planes, in hotel rooms and the rare quiet moments at home. As an ode to these moments of inspiration, tyDi released a beautiful non-dance oriented album called Hotel Rooms (2013)–a compilation of music he had written in hotel rooms all over the world. Refusing to be confined by genre labels or compromise himself as an artist, tyDi created the alias Wish I Was to express himself musically without any restrictions.

Despite his busy schedule, tyDi finds time to run all his own social media accounts. The humble DJ makes an effort to get on a personal level with his fans and share personal stories about his music, as well as things that he loves (like science!). He’ll even play the occasional Jenga game with fans before his shows.

Giraffage

Giraffage is San Francisco-based producer and beat guru, Charlie Yin. His signature sound of electronic pop has won him praise from musical tastemakers Pitchfork, FADER and XLR8R. He burst onto the music scene with his debut Pretty Things EP. It was immediately followed by his dreamy synth-pop debut album, Comfort, which XLR8R called “[an] ebullient slice of electronic pop … [with] pleasantly ambient and sample-laden instrumentals.” In February 2013, he released his lush Needs mixtape via Alpha Pup Records, showing his versatility as a producer and “omnivorous music lover,” as noted by Pitchfork. Giraffage’s staying power was fully cemented when he remixed one the sexiest albums of the decade, The-Dream’s Love/Hate, and turned it on its head. FADER backed the project saying, “Trying to remember a moment of anticipation right before hitting the play button as happy as the one I just experienced.” He most recently dropped his No Reason EP via Fool’s Gold, the first release to ever feature Charlie’s original work. He has toured with Phantogram, Flume, XXYYXX and served as the main support on Porter Robinson’s massive “Worlds Tour.” He has performed at staple music festivals such as Outside Lands, Treasure Island Music Festival, HARD Day of The Dead,Mysteryland, Tomorrowworld Hard Summer, CRSSD, Splash House, Lightning in a Bottle, What The Festival, Roskilde in Europe, Mad Decent Block Parties in India along side Major Lazer.

Getter

For American electronic music producer Tanner Petulla, more often recognized by his stage name Getter, 2015 was a year of exploration in the art of experimentation and 2016 is proof he is not going anywhere anytime soon. Already there’s been the announcement of his second EP Wat The Frick signing onto the Skrillex imprint OWSLA releasing September 2nd, just in time to celebrate his embarkment of his first headlining North American tour this a mere week after, as well as constant additions of new merchandise to his Trippy Burger clothing line along side a multitude of music projects. As he grows as an artist – his musical repertoire has evolved from aggressive baselines early in his career, to a blend of beats sailing buoyantly over waves of reverb and bass, to mesmerizing hip hop beats as seen on Pouya’s & $UICIDEBOY$ most recent albums – there’s truly no genre safe to his touch.

Destructo

Destructo (Gary Richards) began DJing and producing undergrounds in the early 90s in Los Angeles, most notably creating RaveAmerica at Knotts Berry Farm. Rick Rubin subsequently handpicked Gary for A&R in electronic music at Def American Recordings, launching a noteworthy career with such acts as Lords of Acid, Messiah, David Holmes, Basement Jaxx, Dub Pistols, God Lives Underwater and founding 1500 Records and Nitrus Records. After carrying his success to the metal world with No Name Mgmt, Destructo returned to his roots in 2007 by creating HARD. HARD events such as the HARD Haunted Mansion have become synonymous with cutting edge electronic music and unforgettable experiences, where the talent rosters reflect Destructo’s own impeccable DJ sets.

Skrillex

In a cluttered home studio in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District, mere blocks from where he wrote “Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites”, the song that sold millions of copies and helped instigate one of the largest shifts in modern American music in recent memory, the galvanizing totem of a youth movement daps at a midi controller, ceaselessly cuing the same snare sound over and over and over and over, for literally hours. Literally. Hours.

Skrillex has a lot of thank yous. At around the one-minute mark of his first Grammy acceptance speech in 2012, iPhone in hand, scrolling interminably down a list, it became clear that Skrillex doesn’t feel isolated from his peers. It’s always been a defining trait of his character, this aptitude at building things with others. It’s since gone on to characterize, color, and define his career, too. Whether with his label, OWSLA, his numerous media projects, the NEST online community or the building in downtown LA he’s currently converting into a state-of-the art creative space, Skrillex knows there’s power in numbers. Skrillex quite simply loves to make things.

Across the board, those numbers are significant- when a person with one of the largest social media followings in the world decides to engage his community, they engage back. Within a year of forming the label, OWSLA, in 2011, it had launched the careers of some of the most buzzing names in American electronic music, all the while staying true to their connection to the community of artists around them and exploring multiple genres along the way. OWSLA continues to pick up momentum, more heads become aware every day, and they tell their friends.

One year later Skrillex collaborated with friend/cult filmmaker Harmony Korine by scoring his critically acclaimed Spring Breakers movie and also composed an original track for Pixar’s Wreck It Ralph while simultaneously penning one of the biggest club hits of the year with A$AP Rocky (Wild For The Night). He then dropped his first fashion collaboration with G-Star around the same time (it sold out globally in a matter of days). Three consecutive homeruns across a broad appeal spectrum, but it’s easy to identify commonalities among these seemingly disparate projects when they’re examined in this uniquely Skrillex context — awesomeness prevails, always. And it’s always a team effort.

And every team needs a dugout. So when Sonny returned to Los Angeles to rally the troops, plucking talent from France, Spain, Chicago, Florida, and Tennessee this last spring he purchased an 11,000 square foot compound nestled in the heart of LA. It currently houses his label, management, and publicity staffs as well as a new, futurist venture called NESTHQ.com. The project, which began as a subscription-based sub-label of OWSLA, began to take on new meaning as the team sought to further integrate all of the Skrillex and OWSLA-related media content into one vertical silo. NESTHQ.com was formed as a means of iterating the values and personalities of the dance music community, Skrillex’s community, in one consistently positive voice. The building itself is the physical manifestation of this intent and more plans are underway to construct several high-end recording studios, media production labs, video suites and other creative spaces to further inspire the associated artists under the OWSLA/Skrillex umbrella.

But let’s get back to that snare sound. Sonny John Moore, the man who upended popular music in 2011, knows there’s too much in the balance, and he addresses the seemingly menial with utmost gravity. He invests himself into everything he does. It’s not just a career at stake. Skrillex acknowledges the huge responsibility we all have to bring positivity into the world through art and expression, and that whether its iterated musically or otherwise, getting those ideas out is group therapy at its best. We’re in this together, so let’s get it right.

Finally, despite being one of the biggest names in music, Skrillex hasn’t walked away from the ‘do-it-ourselves’ attitude he’s had since his start. “When you grow you’re going to need more people, more bodies to do stuff,” he said. “It’s all about making true partnerships. I think the less you can take out of something and the more you can do yourself, it’s more equal-interest. So you’re not taking out big bank loans, you’re betting on yourself and you can sustain everything. Maybe it takes a little longer — it’s been since 2004 to get to where I am now, with the same team, the same manager. That’s how we did it. There was no rush ever to get giant checks.” Throughout all of this, he’s decided to keep the music industry at an arm’s length. “I kind of wanted to stay away from Hollywood… I guess my scene and the energy and the core of where I came from is Downtown L.A. and throwing warehouse parties and being inspired by spaces that gushed potential, more than something that was already done.”

Datsik

With a string of #1 Beatport releases, sell-out tours and a rapidly growing fan base, the Canadian producer/DJ and Firepower label boss has entered this year on an exceptionally high note, and with the release of his most recent LP Let It Burn¸ he’s already making his claim to an even bigger 2013. For DATSIK, his Firepower imprint stands out as an extension of his revered and applauded musical persona. He’s released a series of successful singles and EPs including works for Excision’s Rottun Recordings and collaborated with the legendary Korn on their The Path of Totality album and toured the U.S. with the group. Then, 2012 saw him release his proper full-length debut, Vitamin D, via Dim Mak Records and featuring the epic single “Evilution” [Featuring Jonathan Davis of Korn & Infected Mushroom]. However, founding a label has always been part of his plan. FIREPOWER, helmed by DATSIK, formally contributes to the music landscape with releases from Barron, Protohype, Rekoil, Terravita, Getter, The Frim, DKS, Sub Antix and more.
