Goldroom
On his full-length debut West of the West, L.A.-based songwriter/producer Goldroom bends the boundaries of electronic music to build a sleekly composed but soulful update of the quintessential California sound. “I left where I grew up and came to California with all these romantic ideas of what L.A. would be like,” says Josh Legg, a Massachusetts-born multi-instrumentalist who’s made music as Goldroom since 2011. “Over the years I’ve fallen completely in love with everything about it, even all the grit and grime, and with this album I wanted to pay homage to L.A. and how it still feels so romantic to me.”
Though it takes its title from a Theodore Roosevelt bon mot–“When I am in California, I am not in the West, I am west of the West”–the follow-up to Goldroom’s acclaimed 2015 EP It’s Like You Never Went Away mines much inspiration from Legg’s love for the sea. “For me, ‘west of the West’ can mean the Pacific, which has become an important place for me over the last decade,” he says. A longtime sailor, Legg also notes that “a lot of my childhood memories are of me and my dad on this little tiny boat, cruising around the New England coast. I spent countless hours just sailing and listening to music, and the feeling of that experience has stayed with me really heavily over the years.” Throughout the album, Goldroom reveals his deep-rooted affinity with the ocean by sculpting expansive arrangements and instilling each song with a serene yet kinetic energy.
That energy’s partly sourced from Goldroom’s ingenuity in interlacing live guitar, bass, and percussion into electronic soundscapes to form a sound both forward-pushing and timeless. On West of the West, he further shapes that glossy but groove-heavy sound by tapping into sensibilities of early French house music. “I don’t feel all that influenced by producers on a day-to-day basis–songwriting is what’s important to me, so I’m usually thinking about guys like Tom Petty or Curtis Mayfield–but there’s an innocence to what producers like Daft Punk and Alan Braxe do that appeals to me,” says Legg. And just as those artists show an intense fascination with the pop landscape of the early ’80s, Goldroom steeps West of the West in its own nostalgia. “I’ve always used music as an escapist device, as a way to try to get back to that feeling of when you were younger and everything was a little more pure and uncomplicated,” he points out.
On the album-opening “Silhouette,” for instance, Goldroom brilliantly channels the breezy and bass-powered feel of classic French touch music. Slow-building and warmly intimate, the song bittersweetly muses on “what it means to be far away from someone you love and feeling like part of you is missing without them,” as Legg explains.
From start to finish West of the West sustains that dreamy melancholy, a mood informed by Legg’s solo touring as a DJ in recent years. “Being alone on the road for long stretches of time is a pretty unique experience,” he says. “There’s this dual thing of loving that lifestyle of constantly being in motion, but also missing my family and my friends and feeling pulled back home. That’s definitely something I kept coming back to as I was writing for this record.” Trading off vocals with Irish singer/songwriter Rooty throughout West of the West, Goldroom brings a nuanced emotionality to songs like “Back to You” (a sweetly shimmering feel-good track), “Lying to You” (a darkly propulsive number with all the cinematic intensity of an ’80s pop gem), and “Retrograde” (a gorgeously urgent anthem driven by Rooty’s powerful vocal performance).
In creating West of the West, Goldroom aimed to “dig really deep and come up with something more honest and meaningful than what you usually see in dance music.” Aided by his graceful grasp of songcraft, that honesty manifests itself in a spirited vitality also abundant in Goldroom’s energetic live show. (Featuring a full band setup, the Goldroom live set finds Legg backed by a bassist, drummer, and fellow singer as he alternates between guitar and keys.) “It’s a lot different from older Goldroom stuff, where my primary concern was whether or not the song was going to work on a dance floor,” Legg adds in reflecting on West of the West.
Debuting with the Angeles EP in 2011, Goldroom emerged soon after the dissolution of Legg’s former band NightWaves. “I’d been writing all these songs but had no outlet for them, so people suggested I start a solo thing,” recalls Legg, who borrowed the name Goldroom from a dive bar in Echo Park (“a good place to get drunk and find answers to all of life’s hardest questions”). Though Goldroom was born from his then-burgeoning infatuation with the electronic world, the project drew closely from Legg’s near-lifelong experience in making music. Raised in Wellesley, Massachusetts, he learned to play cello and guitar as a child and soon started writing his own songs and self-recording on a four-track. At age 15 he had a major musical awakening while teaching sailing on Cape Cod, where a group of college kids turned him on to the ’60s/’70s rock and folk artists who would eventually guide his own songwriting. After heading off to study at the University of Southern California, Legg discovered Air, Daft Punk, and other electronic artists whose music “made me feel things I didn’t know that I could feel.” He then began his journey toward crafting boldly inventive electronic music with a classic-pop songwriting structure at its core.
For Goldroom, the main thrill of West of the West is his success in “making a record where I could sit down with an acoustic guitar, play the album all the way through, and still make it work.” But while each song is strong enough to stand unadorned, West of the West’s lush and luminous production ultimately lends the album an even greater emotional depth. “There’s something really incredible about beautiful chords being played using a stack of nicely tuned synthesizers,” Legg says in discussing his passion for electronic music. “And with a drum machine, you can make a kick-drum sound that’s more impactful than any real kick drum. There’s a whole world out there with electronic music, and the thing that gets me most excited as a musician is finding new ways to paint with those palettes while still telling a very human story.”

Bailo
Bailo (Gennaro Bailo) was born August 7, 1991 in Brooklyn, but raised in Queens, NY. He spent much valued time with his grandfather, an Italian singer, who greatly influences Bailo and his mind-blowing tracks still today.
Music has always been in his blood. At the young age of 7, Bailo began singing and utilizing his natural talents. He auditioned for shows, including American Idol, X Factor, and The Voice. As he grew personally and artistically, his interest in singing shifted toward producing. Bailo went from banging on tables in high school with his friends, to making numerous mixtapes for upcoming artists. He’s also made his own mixtape, titled “No Sleep.” The turning point for Bailo occurred at the age of 21 when he was introduced to the EDM genre, specifically trap. It immediately “clicked” for him, and he hasn’t stopped ferociously chasing the dream; recently releasing “Clique,” under Borgore’s label, Buygore.
In the last few months, more artists than ever have taken interest in Bailo, offering him the opportunity to work with names like Riot Ten, HeroBust, 4B, Kennedy Jones, Milk N Cooks, Adventure Club, and many more. Buygore also just released another one of Bailo’s remixes, titled “Breaker.”
If you know of Bailo, you’ve heard his remix of Calvin Harris’ “How Deep Is Your Love,” which essentially put him on the underground trap map. This, along with the rest of his music, was and is heavily supported by DJ Snake, Borgore, Brillz, UZ, HeroBust, 4B, and Kennedy Jones.
Bailo has rapidly become the most promising upcoming producer of trap, so ready your ears for some fresh, innovative, killer beats!
“This is only the beginning,” says Bailo.

Elephante
Driven by an unwavering determination and passion for his craft, in just under two years, Tim Wu — best known as Elephante — has amassed a plethora of flawless productions that have earned him rave reviews from the likes of Rolling Stone, Sirius XM, DJ Mag and Billboard as well as respect from the cream of the dance music elite. His musical maturity and innate ability to create genre-defying hits time and time again could have him easily mistaken for an artist way beyond his years and has seen the dance pop prodigy win the hearts of legions of fans across the world.
Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tim began his musical career as a classically trained pianist and singer-songwriter, playing in bands in high school and college. Graduating from the world- renowned Harvard University, soon after taking his first desk job, Wu soon realized that the corporate lifestyle was not for him, spending every waking hour producing music to admittedly keep himself sane. Finally embracing the ‘Elephant in the room’ that was his desire to break free from the monotonous 9-5 routine, Wu set his sights on the dance music sphere and Elephante was born – quite literally giving up his day job in order to hone his craft and make his mark as one of the most innovative progressive and electro house producers around
today.
Releasing his debut independent single ‘Shake The Earth’ in November 2014, Elephante went on to release his first label single ‘I Want You’ back in June 2015, reaching 1.5 million Spotify streams in less than two months and earning comparisons with the likes of Alesso, Madeon and Avicii. Stepping up to remix duties for everyone from Lorde and Katy Perry to Dirty South and Galantis, Wu achieved a string of Hype Machine #1s for his efforts and has gone on to receive support from major dance music players including Martin Garrix, Tiesto, The Chainsmokers and Morgan Page to name just a few.
In October 2015, the burgeoning star released his third original production, ‘Age Of Innocence’. Released independently as a free download, the single achieved unprecedented success, reaching #18 on the Billboard Dance/Club Chart and was even added to rotation on Sirius XM BPM, Music Choice and iHeart Evolution — no mean feat for an independent release. With over a million plays on Spotify alone, the single caught the attention of Armada Music who snapped it up for re-release in January 2016.
When it comes to world-class productions, Wu is well and truly in a league of his own, single-handedly breathing life into the electronic music scene with a host of impeccable releases. Proving there are no limits when it comes to his creative capabilities, over the last year Wu has showcased his diversity as a producer, deftly switching between the distinctive progressive house sound that has earned him the respect of some of the biggest names in the business, to experimenting with stomping future bass curveballs in the form of ‘Black Ivory’ (February 2016). Going back to his roots in March, Elephante dropped ‘Closer’ ft. BISHØP — a piece of pure progressive house perfection that has since garnered over 5 million streams on Spotify and earned spins on Sirius XM BPM and iHeart Evolution, propelling the song to a Top 20 chart spot on dance radio. Flexing his creative muscles once again, July saw Wu explore yet another side of his musical personality with the release of the captivating electro pop infused single ‘Catching On’ ft. Nevve, a record named ‘Best of the Week’ by Apple Music. The release of his inaugural ‘I Am The Elephante’ EP in September 2016 heralded a new chapter in the young producer’s career as he charted alongside some of dance music’s finest. The EP, which debuted at #2 in the US Dance Album Charts on iTunes, and has so far accumulated over 15 million plays on Spotify as well as support from Billboard, Beats 1 Radio, This Song Is Sick, Proxmity, Mr Suicide Sheep and many more — no mean feat for an independently released project.
Having caught the eyes — and most importantly ears — of talent and tastemakers around the world, it was only a matter of time before demand for Wu’s live shows prevailed. Signed by CAA, Spring 2016 saw Elephante take to the road for an extensive tour of North America, featuring sold out shows from Boston to Jacksonville to Ohio to Vancouver, not to mention a dozen stops on college campuses along the way. Currently in the midst of his biggest ever tour to date, the ‘IATE’ tour will see him play 30 dates in 3 months, including sell out shows in Boston, Dallas, Santra Barbara, New York City and Sacramento, and will see him play major venues such as Omnia (San Diego), Hakkasan (Las Vegas), Create (Los Angeles) and Marquee (New York) — to name just a few. Earning a prized spot at Billboard’s Hot 100 Fest last summer, offers have continued to roll in with appearances at festivals such as Ever After Festival and Hangout Festival just a few announced so far for this year.
Whether he’s crafting originals or whipping up remixes for the A-list, Elephante has rapidly carved a name for himself as one of the most exciting producers on the scene of late. Demonstrating a diversity that has seen him achieve over 45 million SoundCloud plays and a staggering 100 million total digital streams over his relatively short career to date, with demand for his unique sound reaching unprecedented heights last year, it’s safe to say Elephante’s star is most definitely on the rise.
Buku
From the track record of Robert Balotsky’s work as Buku, it’s clear that the Pittsburgh native and graduate of Music Technology is a well-equipped architect of twisted, layered soundscapes. With a menacing grasp on sound design and music theory, Buku combines deceptively simple and emotive melodies, laden with resounding low-end and intricate drum patterns. With a love of drums rooting from childhood, his work reflects his passion — emitting percussive elements only a trained ear could produce.
Buku’s debut EP release, ‘Janky’ sent a shotgun blast into the Bass Music scene – quickly gaining support and full rotation by Diplo, who described Balotsky’s production style as ‘where dubstep is going’ at the brink of 2013. Following his break into the genre, the producer has been championed by a variety of curators, including Bassnectar, Pete Tong & Zane Lowe, as well as garnering the support of his peers for collaborations with the likes of Paper Diamond, G. Jones, in addition to being tapped for remix duties for Minnesota, Griz, Nick Catchdubs, Brillz & Tropkillaz.
With a strong support from the industry, Buku has seen releases on OWSLA’s Nest HQ, UKF’s Pilot Records, as well as features on Fool’s Gold, Main Course, and Mad Decent. The producer’s latest single, ‘Front To Back’, has further solidified his stance in the scene — going viral in only a few weeks upon release, quickly climbing Spotify’s “Global Viral 50” chart to hold the #3 spot, as well as holding a #1 rank on Hype Machine throughout late 2016.
As a result of his consistent output, Buku has quickly placed himself at the forefront of rising talent amongst North American producers — an impressive track record only further supported by his latest EP, ‘No Dramas’, released through the dominant Dutch dance music purveyor, Spinnin’ Records. With more releases slated for the new year, a non-stop touring schedule made up of domestic and international markets, as well as a packed festival season, and continued support from top labels & industry heavyweights, 2017 will surely see Buku’s continued upwards trajectory.
Matador
It’s been a whirlwind three years for Dublin man Gavin Lynch better known as Matador. From initial beginnings as a sound engineer and DJ in his native Dublin, the dedicated producer has plotted a carefully devised route right to the forefront of techno in just three short years. The organic evolution of Matador’s productions has been clear for all to see, the cultivation of his instantly recognizable sound an intrinsic part of his journey from humble beginnings. Perc Trax and Cocoon were early stop-offs before Matador found his artistic home with Minus, the much respected stable of the legendary Richie Hawtin and the perfect outlet for an adventurous producer like himself, a label which has had a substantial impact on his flourishing career.
The initial break came on Hawtin’s Plus 8 thanks to a driving monster of a remix for Bryan Zentz’s D-Clash which announced Matador as one to watch in dance circles. Following that up with a debut EP on Minus was perfect opportunity for Matador and the success of his Kingswing release gave him the impetus to launch himself fully into the world of techno. With staunch support from Mr Hawtin himself, Matador became a regular fixture on the Minus lineups around the world, making his debut at the revered Watergate in Berlin and going on to perform at a multitude of Minus events that year as well as holding a residency that summer at Enter in Space, Ibiza.
On the production front he followed his debut venture up with a succession of well received EP’s and releases on Minus including the likes of Lamana and Dikspring as well as the much lauded Spooks EP, five tracks which truly encapsulate the Matador sound. 2012 proved to be a productive year for the Dublin man with a constant stream of quality output helping cement his place as a rising star amongst the techno community. This also led to string of highly regarded remixes from Matador including a prominent rework of Moby – Extreme Ways which was the lead track on the movie soundtrack for The Bourne Ultimatum released via Sony/EMI. Matador also found time for a pair of exciting remixes for two titans of the industry; Layo & Bushwacka and Booka Shade which earned him widespread plaudits and wider recognition amongst dance music followers.
During this time he also began to hone his live performance setup, incorporating midi controllers, samplers and effects to create a formidable live show perfectly tailored to his needs. His outgoing personality, combined with the vibrant nature of his music has helped him engender a unique party atmosphere at his live shows, something techno fans around the world can attest to. This also led to various festival invitations and an extensive touring schedule with visits to Monegros, Balaton Sound, Time Warp, Creamfields Argentina, Melt Festival, BPM, Exit Festival, Movement Detroit and many more in just a few short years.
Underneath the Enter banner, Gavin has been a regular resident performing extensively in Ibiza over the past three seasons and at Enter events all over the world from Brixton to Amsterdam and farther afield in Los Angeles and Miami. Performing at Enter has also given Matador the chance to perfect his live performance and his successes here were reflected by fact that he was anointed Best Live Performer Ibiza 2014 at this year’s DJ Awards, recognition of his dedicated efforts in a live setting. Despite a rigorous touring schedule Matador has also managed to preserve precious time for the studio, using his regular live shows as the platform to create effective techno music, his sounds evolving to meet the demands of the crowd he faces each week.
The past two years have seen Matador continue his studio prowess with a string of releases including a remix for techno legends Dubfire and Oliver Huntemann and a new EP for Minus in Zoles which was a 5 track salvo for his label of choice. 2014 saw the producer indulge his love of remix-ing with a very special effort for Depeche Mode as part of a package for Soothe My Soul (Columbia Records) and a rework of Phil Kiernan – Computer Games as well as numerous personal edits the highlight of which saw him take on Dan Robbins – Chanting in the Dark. 2014 also saw Matador’s Versions EP come to light, inspired by the many sounds that influenced him as a young DJ, the EP gave new life to a number seminal dance tracks including most interestingly The Chemical Brothers — It Began In Africa. Many of his new productions combined with those of his Versions EP were included in his recent Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 which caught the imagination of many in the techno world and fulfilled a longtime ambition for the Irishman. His evolution as a producer and artist in the space of three short years presented to the world in sonic form.
With renewed focus on the studio this year as well as a primed touring schedule its clear the Matador name will continue it’s inexorable rise. A new EP on Minus is imminent and an artist album for 2015 has been confirmed, something that will no doubt excite the growing fan base of the charismatic Irishman. His love for live performance will also be indulged with a new live show almost ready to be rolled out, something that will bring a smile to the face of the many Matador fans who have crossed paths with him over the last three years, connecting with him and joining him on what has been an incredible journey. With all this in mind there can be no doubt, the coming months will provide a plethora of seminal moments for one of techno’s most notable mavericks.
