Something Wicked Weekend Warriors: Antiserum, Arnej, Tommy Trash

Phew! It was pure torture keeping our Something Wicked lineup a secret for so long. But now that we’ve revealed our frightening lineup, we can start having some fun! All the more preparation for the Halloween event bewitching the Sam Houston Race Park on October 26th. Have you bought your tickets yet?

For our first weekend warrior post, it’s all about the energy. With hyperactive percussion, or pounding kid drums, there are many ways an artist can pack on the energy in a live mix. So to set your weekend alight, here are three mixes where you are sure to feel the energy.

Antiserum

Earlier this year, Antiserum released a mix for Smog Records and BBC Radio 1xtra. Antiserum has been creating quite a buzz this past year with tracks like “Brick Squad Anthem” and “Bangladesh” with Mayhem. This mix falls right in line that “buzz.” With a monster track list of 40 songs blended in the hour mix, we love that this mix is high-energy from the very start and technically, it is mixed to perfection.

Arnej – Coldharbour Day 2013

At the end of July every year, the Coldharbour family unite for their annual Coldharbour Day celebration. Featuring special all-Coldharbour sets and showcases, the marathon radio event dedicated entirely to the fans. We were completely blown away by this mix. And the best part is? It is 100% Arnej‘s reworks and productions. With a pulsating bass kick throughout the mix, the twists and breakdowns on some of these tracks will make you do a double take.

Tommy Trash – Live at Electric Daisy Carnival 2013

This Aussie had a massive set at this year’s Electric Daisy Carnival. As you could guess, we’re suckers for a high-energy set, especially when it’s packed full of bangers. We hope you weren’t going to try and fall asleep after this mix, because, SPOILER ALERT: you can’t. In the mix, you’ll hear some classic electro sounds that we’ve come to expect from the one, Mr. Tommy Trash, but there is also some acid style synths that make their way into the set. We’re really diggin’ the retro influence.

Sun City Music Festival Weekend Warriors: Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki, Alesso

We regret to inform you, this will be our last Weekend Warriors post for Sun City Music Festival. But rejoice! That just means that the event we’ve been waiting for is right around the corner! You won’t need to warrior through the weekend with mixes next Saturday or Sunday – you’ll be too busy dancing all night.

For the final warriors, we’ve gotta give it up for our headliners. We are so excited to have Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, Steve Aoki, and Alesso performing on our Sun City stage this August 31st and September 1st, but which mixes do we chose? The amount of shows these four have played at is endless!

So, we decided to bring it back to basics. The essential basics. At some point in their careers, all of our headliners have lent their mixing skills to the pivotal radio program Essential Mix hosted by Pete Tong. To close out our weekly Friday journeys, we’re sending you off with four mixes that aren’t just good – they’re essential.

Isla Del Sol Fest Artist Profile: Carnage

artist carnageCarnage is having a very stellar year. From being hand picked to play some of the biggest festivals in the world, to making a name for himself in the big room house circuit, there is no denying the impact this Isla Del Sol Fest talent has had on dance music in 2013. Even Tiësto has dropped some productions from the leader of the #ChipolteGang. The best part? He’s only getting started.

Born Diamanté Blackmon, Carnage began producing at the age of 16 with the help of a few self-help books and a passion for hip-hop. Born in Guatemala, he grew up in a small town in Maryland. “Living in the country, there was nothing really to do. I used to rap, so I thought making my own beats would both be cool and pass the time. I started a group with my friend Bruce, who also rapped, and I started hosting his mixtapes. He would push me into sampling music and pulling eclectic points of reference into the music I was making. From here I got into making beats and developing them into proper tracks, and as time passed, the platform for this music became more and more relevant.”

Now based in Los Angeles, Carnage first came to our attention with his remix of Hardwell’s massive single “Spaceman.” Dubbing his sound “festival trap,” Carnage exploded onto the scene and it hasn’t really slowed down since. With an unwillingness to be pigeonholed under one genre, he has ventured out from his original trap style releases and has taken on that big room “festival-style” sound. He’s even been working on some some other goodies including deep and electro house, drum and bass and anything else that strikes his fancy, “If I want to make a rap record I make it; if I want to make a house record I make it. If I want to make some pretty shit I make some pretty shit.”

We don’t know kind of stuffhe’ll drop when he makes his way to Isla Del Sol Fest, but we do know it’s gonna be a ridiculously great time. So buy your tickets today!

Something Wicked Drop: Figure releases free download; Cosmic Gate selected for Pioneer DJ's 'DJ Art Mix 2013'

Now that we have revealed our full lineup for Houston’s premier Halloween event Something Wicked, we can start delivering news from our talented roster before the anticipated event happening on Saturday, October 26th.

For our first edition of the Something Wicked drop, we’ve got one of our bass acts giving away free music and one of our trance acts using their gifts to give back to the community.

Figure gives away his latest single “War Call”

artist figureSomething Wicked talent Figure has been a staple to the bass music scene for quite some time now. With his Horns of the Apocalypse EP due out on OWSLA on September 10th, Figure released the first single off the upcoming six-song EP yesterday.

“War Call,” featuring the infamous rapper Del The Funky Homosapien, is one of the tracks on the EP that gives us some of Figure’s signature head-pounding dubstep sound.

The EP shows Figure’s sound evolving and taking on that four-to-the-floor style with as exemplified by the track “Eagle” on the same release. We hope to get a taste of the new style when Figure makes his way to Something Wicked. Buy your tickets today!

Cosmic Gate chosen to to be part of Pioneer DJ’s ‘DJ Art Mix 2013’

artist cosmic gateLast week, Pioneer Electronics announced the return of the second Pioneer DJ Art Mix Tour. The tour is a unique fundraising program that pairs many of the world’s best DJs, urban artists and designers together to create original works of art. Not on a canvas or piece of paper, the artists will be working on the industry standard CDJ-2000’s. Pioneer’s director of marketing David Arevalo says, “We’re extremely excited to have the next set of DJs and artists as well as today’s popular brands participate in this worthy cause, and with their help, we can significantly expand our reach and raise even more money than our first event.”

Cosmic Gate, along with many others like Kaskade, Zedd, and James Zabiela, will each receive one CDJ-2000 to paint, design, sculpt or otherwise decorate it to their liking as a representation of their own customized work of art. Pioneer will hold a one-day public exhibition for the art pieces on Thursday, October 10th at Downtown Los Angeles Art Walk and will include music, special appearances and art exhibitions. After the event, there will be a special month-long online auction for the collection with the proceeds going to the VH1 Save The Music® Foundation to restore music education programs in public schools.

We love that the boys are giving back to music education – it makes us that much more excited to celebrate this October 26th. Have you bought tickets yet?

AWOL Sun Artist Profile: A-Trak

artist a-trakAnother Way Of Life: Sun artist A-Trak has been making quite the name for himself from a very early age. Unlike most boys at the age of 13, Alain Macklovitch was in his parent’s Montréal basement mastering the art of scratching and mixing on the turntables he bought with his Bar Mitzvah money. Hard work would soon pay off when he won the DMC World DJ Championship in 1997 at the tender age of 15 – making him the youngest DJ ever to do so. After winning the “World Series” of DJing, he was asked to join the prestigious, but now defunct Invisibl Skratch Piklz, whose members included heavyweights like as Mixmaster Mike and DJ Q-Bert. By the time Alain retired from the competitive DJ scene at 18, he had five world championships under his belt and was ready to expand his musical range.

In 2004, Kanye West recruited Alain as his personal tour DJ. Working with Kanye very closely, Alain performed at MTV specials, the Grammy Awards, multiple MTV Video Music Awards, and worldwide stadium shows. Alain also recorded scratches on Kanye West’s second and third studio albums Late Registration in 2005 and Graduation in 2007. During these years, Alain also released his acclaimed autobiographical DVD in 2006 called Sunglasses Is A Must.

With his career moving with great momentum, another project began to take shape. “I had an indie hip-hop label with my brother Dave called Audio Research. Then my brother started Chromeo and starting touring, and I got the Kanye gig. We were just doing a lot of stuff and not really putting out records. Around 2005 or so, the music that I was playing as a DJ was gravitating more toward this whole movement in the Northeast in the States, where a bunch of the DJs were playing a mishmash of different genres–everything that was club-friendly and uptempo.” Utilizing the idea of genre bending, Alain began to delve further into the project. “…I met Nick Catchdubs and we forged this friendship that was based around sharing music and talking about music. We had a lot of questions, like, ‘Why is this guy working with this producer? He should work with this other guy!’ and ‘What if this record had artwork by this guy?’ What ended up being the catalyst was when I started making music with Kid Sister, which was also when I started experimenting with my own production. Pretty quickly we had this single of hers that was ready to be pressed up. But we didn’t know which label to release it on. That’s when we decided to start this label together.”

That label is of course, Fool’s Gold Records. Bridging the hip-hop and dance music worlds together, the imprint has introduced us to artists like Kid Sister, Kid Cudi and A-Trak’s side project with Armand Van Helden, Duck Sauce. Called an “indie innovator” by Billboard and a “tastemaker label by the New York Times, Fool’s Gold Records is one of the most respected imprints in dance music today. We are so excited to have A-Trak joining us for this year’s AWOL Sun in Cabo San Lucas. You can witness the master turntablist at work this October 10-13th, but there are only a few spots left, so book your room today!
