Isla Del Sol Fest Artist Profile: Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike

artist dimitri vegas & like mikeFresh off the success of their massive hit “Chatahoochee,” Isla Del Sol Fest acts Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are definitely at the top of their A-game right now. Releasing a steady output of banging remixes and festival-inspired house, the brotherly duo are one of the hottest names in dance music.

Though the world is buzzing for this tenacious duo, the Dimitri and Michael Thivaios did not have the same the mindset about their future career paths. Dimitri began DJing at the age of 14, making several appearances in smaller clubs and also became the resident DJ at BeatFM radio. He later left Belgium in 1999 and began touring Europe. Living in Mallorca and Halkidiki, Greece before moving eventually making his way to Ibiza in 2003, Dimitri’s prominence rose to become the resident at world renowned clubs like Privilege and Space. It was here on the island of every dance music fan’s paradise, where the boys stumbled onto a great idea. Dimitri recalls, “Well we were actually born in Greece but moved to Belgium when we were kids. Mike’s always been more into hip-hop than me and been MCing for a while, then when I was out in Ibiza I was playing house in a club, Mike walked in and started flowing some beats on top of my mix just for fun, and the whole place went nuts. We tried it a couple more times and every time the same reaction so we knew we were on to something special. It’s just blown up from there.”

Even with a steady sure-fire formula in hand, it wasn’t until much later that Dimitri and Mike would feel they could commit to music fully as a career. Mike relives that time in an interview, “I think the pinpoint for us was in 2005 when we decided to move back to Belgium after living years in places like Ibiza etc with non stop parties, build our studio and focus on producing music. We decided to get serious and it paid off.” And pay off it most certainly did as their introduction to the world would be their edit of Swedish House Mafia’s “Leave the World Behind.” The following year, Dimitri and Mike became Tommorrowland residents, a title that they still hold to this day.

If they aren’t packing on the energy in their massive sets in sold-out shows around the world, you can currently catch Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike in the studio or manning their own imprint Smash The House, a sister to Spinnin’ Records.
