Monster Block Party Artist Profile: Steve Aoki

artist steve aokiWidely known for his acrobatic crowd surfing stunts, affinity for cake, spraying champagne bottles, and riding rafts on the dance floor, Steve Aoki‘s personality and music has marked the dance music scene. Born in Miami, Aoki presents his music to fans in wacky, unconventional ways – and it’s been like that since early beginnings of his career. An electro house superstar, Aoki has climbed to position number 15 in DJ Mag’s Top 100 list.

The Monster Block Party artist first started DJing he was a student at the University of California in Santa Barbara under the moniker Kid Millionaire. He began producing records and hosting concerts in his living room, calling the “venue,” the Pickle Patch. In 1996, now in his early 20s, Steve created the now world-famous label Dim Mak Records. Known as a Chinese form of martial arts called “Death Touch,” Dim Mak is still delivering great music to the world 17 years later. “My sound is about maximal energy. I want to make people throw things. I want people to break their head through a ceiling and go nuts. Artists I work with go crazy in the studio whenever we are working on tracks. If we can’t control ourselves writing the song, that’s a good thing.”

Aoki’s debut mix album, Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles, was released in January 2008 with an Essential Mix airing that same year, instantly propelling him to the international spotlight. Steve has held his position with his “Always on Tour” approach and a continual stream of great music. He’s remixed for a countless number of artists like Jackson 5, Drake, Kayne West, Eminem, The Killers and Snoop Dogg. And being an avid lover of collaborations, Aoki has worked with Kid Cudi, will.i.am, Afrojack, Armand Van Helden and more recently, the track “Boneless” with Chris Lake and Tujamo which went #1 on Beatport’s main chart.

Performing an average of 250 shows a year, Aoki has recently embarked a nationwide bus tour. We can’t wait to get Aokified when the Aokify tour makes its way to Nashville’s Monster Block Party on Saturday, October, 26th. Tickets are now avialable, buy your tickets today!

Something Wicked Sound Clash: Wolfgang Gartner, Figure

Something Wicked is just a few weeks away and as the countdown continues, make sure all you ghouls and goblins buy your tickets before it’s too late!

For this Sound Clash we are merging two big names. Wolfgang Gartner and Figure are creating new sonic experiences that are currently transforming dance music. These acclaimed artists are shaping music that has never been heard before. With Gartner currently on tour, and Figure lined up for the Something Wicked Festival, music fans can’t wait to hear their next releases.

Wolfgang Gartner

artist wolfgang gartnerWhether its because of his attention to detail or because of his constant work ethic, Wolfgang Gartner undeniably changed the way the world saw the electro house genre by crafting a sound that no one has produced before. “It could take me three hours to add this little millisecond sound that nobody but me will ever know is there, but I do it.”

Though originally creating deep house music under his real name Joey Youngman, the name Wolfgang Gartner was revealed in 2007. His single “Wolfgang’s 5th Symphony” redefined how we thought electro house should be structured, “I have to make something that’s never been made before; have to make the best thing that I’ve ever done in my life – otherwise it gets stagnant or worse.” The innovative track “Wolfgang’s 5th Symphony” went on to become the highest selling song on Beatport in 2009, solidifying Gartner’s place as a dance music favorite.

A lover of analogue sounds, for Gartner, analogue equipment makes a big difference in terms of sound quality. “I’m more concerned with music than technology. I’m willing to write the entire breakdown of ‘Space Junk’ on an old keyboard with a busted arpeggiator that comes out so muddy that I have to deal with the hassle of spending a whole day editing it in 16th notes, but the fact that it came out of a synth – and not a plug-in – makes it totally worth the day I spent.”

His newest release, a collaboration with other Wicked talent Tommy Trash, “Hounds of Hell,” shows off his innate ability to authenticate new trends in electro. Using a fantastic mix of both artists’ unique sounds and a drop that you’ll never see coming, we hope to hear “Hounds of Hell” when Wolfgang Gartner makes his way to Sam Houston Race Park on Saturday, October 26th in Houston, TX. Figure

artist figureSuccess came at a whirlwind for bass music sensation Josh Gard, better known as Figure. Just a few years ago, he was creating music in his recording studio in rural Indiana. Now, the name Figure is everywhere, from releasing a series of amazing originals and remixes to his banger collaborations with industry heavyweights like Diplo, Tommy Lee and Flux Pavilion.

Known for his pristine mix of great buildups, unpredictable heavy breaks and a deep-rooted love of horror, his darker style has long been a favorite soundtrack for dance music fans on Halloween. After releasing three volumes of his Monsters of Drumstep series, Figure gained quite an avid and devoted following. Following the success of his first series, Figure went on to release The Destruction Series, which has been best described as “an amusement park with twists and turns through an intergalactic electro war armed with robots and missile drop laser synths.” Josh says, “I just like how artists present a package of something close to an adventure… Like a theme park of sound that is an experiment and experience for everyone.”

Currently touring with crunkstepper Crizzly on the All Black Everything tour, get ready for a monster of a show when Figure takes the stage at Something Wicked on Saturday, October 26th. Grab your tickets today!

Freaks, Beats and Treats Artist Profile: Kaskade

artist kaskadeFreaks, Beats and Treats headliner Kaskade was once hailed by the New York Times as the “new face of electronic dance music.” With over a decade of experience and a devoted following like no other, Kaskade is no longer a new face, but rather a staple to the genre as a whole.

Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, Ryan Raddon crafted his DJ skills in his dorm room while being heavily influenced by bands like The Cure, Echo and The Bunnymen, and The Smiths. Still in his 20s, Raddon started working as an A&R assistant at OM Records while continuing to develop his own sound as a artist. And as fate would have it, one day, while looking through a nature book, Raddon saw a picture of a waterfall cascading into a body of water, thus adapting the stage name we’ve come to know him as. The path to international success was a slow one. “I’ve had a very steady climb and I never did mobiles. I played a few weddings and I still get quite a few wedding requests. I probably get 20 [requests] a year because I write a lot of love songs. I also wonder how many people have procreated while listening to my music.”

Though Kaskade released his first single in 2001 with the track “What I Say,” it would be his second album that would garner more worldwide recognition. Long player In the Moment hosted his first top 10 single “Steppin’ Out,” reaching #5 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play chart and #6 on Dance Radio Airplay. His fourth single “Everything” reached #11 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Play helping to define his signature sound of airy and dewy female vocals with memorable melodies.

Undeniably one of dance music’s favorite anthems, “Move For Me” is a collaboration Kaskade did with deadmau5. The single became Kaskade’s fifth top 10 hit on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay Chart and reached #1 by Fall 2008. “I had deadmau5 on instant messenger a year ago. I’d bought ‘Not Exactly’ and a couple of other [deadmau5] songs and I was really into what he was doing. I hit him up a couple of times on MySpace because I didn’t have a contact for him–like, ‘Hey, this is Kaskade and I’m really into what you’re doing. I got one of his tracks and I had an idea for the verse, lyrics and melody.’ I went ahead and wrote vocals, got it recorded and I was playing it out in clubs, testing it out. I mashed up an idea I had over one of his tracks and it totally worked.”

Kaskade’s contribution to dance music has helped to lay the groundwork for a resurgence of progressive that continues to capture the ears of a new generation of music lovers around the globe. DJ Times and Pioneer DJ agree as both have named him the #1 DJ in America on their respective lists.

Having just recently release his seventh LP Fire & Ice, Kaskade is currently spearheading his headlining Atmosphere Tour nationwide. We can’t wait to see waves in our atmosphere when Kaskade makes his way to Hidalgo, Texas for Freaks Beats N Treats on Saturday, October 26th. Tickets are still available, so buy your tickets today!
