Disco Donnie Presents Brings Thievery Corporation and Galactic to Jazzfest by Nite

This forthcoming Spring, like many times in the past, music fans in New Orleans and the surrounding areas will flock to the city for two weeks of music from some of the industry’s most well-known names for Jazzfest by Nite. Disco Donnie Presents and Ampersand Events are excited to team up once again to bring Thievery Corporation and Galactic to perform during the epic event on Saturday, May 3rd at Sugar Mill.

Thievery Corporation

It’s amazing to think of the success Thievery Corporation has amassed over the years with little to do with radio play. The electronic outfit consisting of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton have created a musically diverse empire with their eclectic mix of reggae, jazz, dub, afro beat, psychedelic rock and bossa nova styles, all woven together with rhythmic trip-hop beats.

Still trailblazing their unique sound nearly 20 years after their formation, the British duo entered 2014 with the announcement of their seventh studio album Saudade. Out on April 1st on their ESL Music imprint, Saudade is the first record devoted entirely to the Brazilian-born genre that first connected the duo – bossa nova. “We always try to progress into something different and stretch our musical chops,” says Eric Hilton, “and taking a whole album to dive into this one sound seemed like a really great way to do that.” Drawing influence from classic Brazilian performers, the album still captures the group’s sensual sound that fans around the world have grown to love. Rob Garza adds, “It’s a bit of a departure for us, but at the same time these are our roots, this is what brought us together. It’s us coming full circle from electronic music back to something organic before we move on to our next chapter.”

Galactic

If you have celebrated a true New Orleans Mardi Gras in the past 18 years, chances are you’ve heard of the collaborative band Galactic. The quintet have been a staple to the carnival experience with their annual Lundi Gras show that goes from sunrise and leads to a sleepless Mardi Gras day. With their unique format, the band surprisingly hasn’t had a lead singer for years – but don’t be so quick to peg them as a purely instrumental group. Their output is more like a showcase than anything else, often featuring different New Orleans-based vocalists and instrumental soloists.

Galactic’s acclaimed album Carnivale Electricos was lauded for its party vibes throughout, all while evoking the electric atmosphere of their beloved city. With a knack for creating music that whisks the listener away to the essence of Mardi Gras and all its variety of flavors, the band has become masters of their own tried-and-true formula, Producer Robert Mercurio explains, “The way we write music–we come up with a demo, or a basic track, and then we collectively decide how we’re gonna finish it.” Since every band mate has a say in the creation process, their cohesion results in a groovy rhythmic sequence rich in Brazilian influences and funk that flawlessly glides from one surprise to the next.

The #SMFTampa 2014 Journey - Chapter 2: Atmosphere

Disco Donnie Presents, Sunset Events, and Committee Entertainment are bringing Tampa’s premier dance music event, Sunset Music Festival back to Raymond James Stadium (North Lot) for two days on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday May 25th.

As we countdown the weeks leading up to the festival, we’ll be releasing a series of videos inspired by the Memorial Day Weekend event called the #SMFTampa 2014 Journey. Last week, we highlighted the amazing people who fill our dance floors. This week, our theme is devoted to the “Atmosphere.”

The atmosphere of a festival isn’t just one specific thing. It exists in magical moments. Like when a DJ drops a track with an intense build up and in those few seconds, everyone’s hands are in the air, waiting for the release. Even with eyes closed, you can feel that the thousands of people surrounding you are experiencing the same euphoric feeling that you are at exactly the same time. It’s special moments like that that make the atmosphere of Sunset Music Festival unlike any other.

Celebrating 20 Years of Disco Donnie Presents: Attack of the 50ft Raver Zombies

With 20 years of being in the business, we’ve certainly seen many evolutions of rave culture here at Disco Donnie Presents. From Jnco’s, to fuzzy leg warmers, teddy bear backpacks, and kandi, rave attire has always been known to raise a few eyebrows. With most society unaccustomed to the appearance of the party-goers, Donnie decided to poke a little fun at his rave family with Attack of the 50ft Raver Zombies.

Taking place on January 24, 1998 at State Palace Theater, the inspiration for Attack of the 50ft Raver Zombies was fairly innocent, “I took something from my childhood that I was interested in and basically tried to make it into a party,” Donnie says, “I used those early memories as the catalyst for what I was doing.”

As a kid, you probably could’ve found Donnie in front of a black and white TV watching horror films on the UHF channel, “It was interesting to me,” Donnie recalls, “you had like The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Planet of the Apes, The Blob… when I was trying to come up with a different theme for a show, I just strung some of those movie concepts together.” For Donnie, using this format to think of new themes worked for quite some time too, but we digress.

Thick in the burgeoning rave movement, those on the outskirts of the culture weren’t really sure what to think of ravers, “It was kinda like this time where everyone was down because [people thought] ravers were terrible; nobody liked ravers, you know?” Trying to bring some comedy to opinions of outsiders, Donnie started brainstorming, “I took something from my childhood that I enjoyed and I tried to make a party theme of an old movies from the 40s and 50s – what would it be like if instead of Godzilla or giant 50ft woman, its like a 50ft raver. Back then, people were scared of aliens, in the 90s, people were scared of ravers.”

Attack of the 50ft Raver Zombies had a rather haunting lineup as well. Headliners included West coast rave favorite Astral Matrix, Chicago house legend DJ Sneak, and “Get Get Down” creator Paul Johnson.

Many parties derived from the Attack of the 50ft Raver Zombies theme – but we’ll save those for next week.
