Magnetic Music Festival: Tommie Sunshine and Zeds Dead Sound Clash!

Though one of our Magnetic Music Festival artists is known for remixes of popular rock songs, and the other, for their bassmentality, the sound clash for Tommie Sunshie and Zeds Dead poses as a very interesting one. Although the total number of years active in the music industry between the two is quite varied, both acts have used their prowess to educate and/or benefit the the general public on behalf of the dance music scene.

Tommie Sunshine

Tommie Sunshine has always been ahed of the curve. Born Thomas Lorello, Sunshine has been the go-to source for everything dance music related and DJed everywhere from dirty dive bars to the Guggenheim Museum. He is a producer, sought after remixer, DJ and songwriter and he has been deeply rooted in the dance music industry for over 20 years.

Born in the birthplace of house music, Chicago, the now Brooklyn resident is known for a lot of things, but perhaps he is best known for his remixes of popular rock or pop songs for the likes Fall Out Boy, Kelis, Shiny Toy Guns, Yoko Ono, and Katy Perry. He is also known for his long-standing history with the rave scene in the Midwest, which in turn has helped him become a vital asset for anyone who’s wanted to know more about the underground dance music culture. Sunshine has made an appearance on Peter Jennings Reporting on ABC, two separate BBC documentaries on House Music, and even makes a cameo on the rave DVD release, “Rise,” a documentary about our very own Disco Donnie.

Today, you can read up on the state of dance music culture via Tommie’s column on the Huffington Post, or get down to his work alongside The Disco Fries and the outfit he’s in with Bart B More and RipTidE under the moniker Horsepower. Or, you can grab your tickets and see Tommie Sunshine at the Magnetic Music Festival!

Zeds Dead

“Zed’s dead baby. Zed’s dead” Actually, Zed is alive and well thanks to DC and Hooks, the two men behind Canadian outfit Zeds Dead. Known for their crazily catchy bass-influenced tunes, the two originally began making beats that were heavily hip-hop influenced. Forming the summer of 2009 the boys’ first showcased their tracks at their debut performance at The Social and about a year later, were booked weekly for a gig called “Bassmentality.”

The two have come a long way considering they just kicked off their world tour last month and have an impending performance in June in Afghanistan alongside Kid Rock and Garth Brooks, representing for dance music and performing for the troops. We can’t wait to get ratchet with Zeds Dead as they take the stage at this year’s Magnetic Music Festival. General admission and VIP tickets are now available, buy your tickets now!

Magnetic Music Festival Artist Profiles: Dash Berlin

A few weeks ago, we announced that Liquified and Disco Donnie Presents would be embarking on a new brand new venture for dance music fans in the Southeast. On April 20, 2013, Magnetic Music Festival will take place in Atlanta, GA and feature an audiovisual sensory experience with state-of-the-art production, sound, video mapped stage designs, LEDs and lasers all set to the backdrop of amazing music from some of the finest DJs in the industry who you will be learning about through our artist profile series. Today’s profile will help get you acquainted with the #7th DJ in the World, Dash Berlin.

Hailing from Hague, Netherlands, Dash Berlin frontman, Jeffrey Sutorius, is no stranger to the electronic music industry. Working for many influential record stores and being an avid collector of vinyl trance music himself, Sutorius has a knack for creating music for a universal dancefloor. Calling on close friends and producers Eelke Kalberg and Sebastiaan Molijn (responsible for international anthem, “Better Off Alone”) in early 2006, the trio formed the Dash Berlin project and designed an unprecedented new sound of trance, coined as the “Dash Berlin Sound.”

Their 2008 single, “Till the Sky Falls Down,” was not only their debut release, but also their first big hit, as Armin van Buuren added the track to his popular Universal Religion mixed album. Following the success of the single, Armin quickly signed Dash Berlin to the revered, Armada Music label. Now, under the Armada umberella, Dash Berlin is the head of Aropa Records, while still managing to headline festivals around the world. Long-time musician, producer and DJ, we’re glad to have him join us at the first-ever Magnetic Music Festival.

Magnetic Music Festival Artist Profiles: Zeds Dead

“Whose chopper is this?”
“It’s Zed’s.”
“Who’s Zed?”
“Zed’s dead, baby. Zed’s dead.”

While the name “Zeds Dead” is a reference to a classic scene in the 1994 Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction, it is also a monogram for the members’ names, Zack and Dylan. Dylan Mamid, artist name DC, and Zack Rapp-Rovan, artist name Hooks, are the duo behind the Canadian dance music outfit, Zeds Dead. The two first paired together in 2004 when they formed their original group, Mass Productions–a group that was heavily influenced by sampling hip-hop. The only releases Mass Productions has to date, is their album out in 2007 entitled, Fresh Beetz. Looking at our lineup, clearly we like fresh beats as well, but we’re glad they decided to scrap Plan A move on to Plan Zed.

The summer of 2009 in Toronto, Ontario would see the boys’ first outing as Zeds Dead. DC and Hooks had been working on creating electronic beats, and showcased their tracks at their debut performance at The Social in 2009. About a year later, Zeds Dead was booked as a weekly for a gig in Toronto, called “Bassmentality.” The two would go on to release a track by the same name in 2011 as a tribute to the friends and fans who were involved.

Still high on the success of their Hot Sauce EP out on Mad Decent, and with an impending performance in June in Afghanistan alongside Kid Rock and Garth Brooks, 2013 is shaping to be the most exciting year for the boys. We are glad to have them join our inaugural lineup on April 20th, for the Magnetic Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia!
