Sun City Music Festival Artist Profile: Gesaffelstein

Textures and atmospheres come together with skilled beat composition whenever Gesaffelstein takes the stage. Born Mike Levy, this Sun City Music Festival talent stands apart from the current techno scene in Paris because of his dark, yet energetic approach to production.

Born in Lyon, France, this 28-year old was feeding his musical reference library since the 90s, finding a love of electronic music born from Punk and New Wave. “In the beginning I’d never thought of doing music, I was always more into art but it always seemed like an inaccessible goal for the long-term. The first time I heard techno was when I was around 13 or 14 years old, listening to CDs that I found in my sisters bedroom. It wasn’t a sudden thing but little by little I began buying records, not mixing yet as that came through a friend who had decks at his house. At around sixteen I began to get interested in production. Being a producer was something that I could see a future in for myself,” Levy recalls in an interview.

Though he admittedly made many mistakes when he was younger, music had long been something he prided himself on. “I did a lot of stupid things in my youth and hadn’t really done anything with my life so when I found this thing, music, I said to myselfthat I had to concentrate on it because I was passionate about it.” And it wouldn’t be long before he found a ní®che in techno. “Pretty quickly I got into techno andimmediately wanted to know about its origins. I was interested in disco but I really fell in love with New Wave and industrial music from the 80s.” It is that style, currently, that Levy is inspired by, juxtaposing techno with crisp rhythms and dissonant tones creating a “dance metal” sound.

His first EP Vengeance Factory released in 2008 on OD Records was well received to much critical acclaim, and in 2010, Levy signed to the revered Turbo Records, releasing his Variations EP and later, releasing his Conspiracy Part 1 EP in 2011. Although, if you ask him, a producing DJ was never in the cards. “It wasn’t a clear objective to become a DJ/producer, it came more naturally. I have always been very faithful to my first music influences such as New Wave and the electro from Detroit. Today, I’m listening to less and less of ‘entertaining’ music. I’m not listening to music on an iPod in the street or in the tubes… And when I listen to a track that I love, I don’t listen to it a thousand times, I just need to go in my studio and I try to produce something better.”

Mixing the German word gesamkunstwerk meaning total art work with the surname of visonary Albert Einstein, Gesaffelstein will bring his innovative and atmospheric dark techno sound to Sun City Music Festival this August 31st September 1st. Tickets are still available online and in stores!

Sun City Music Festival Les Guerriers Du Week-End: French Fries, Popof, Gesaffelstein

Oh, weekend! How we’ve missed you so. And as another week flies by, Labor Day weekend draws nearer, which means Sun City Music Festival is rapidly approaching. If you haven’t bought your tickets to the Labor Day weekend celebration, what are you waiting for? Get your joie de vivre and order tickets online or in select stores!

If you haven’t noticed, we’re feeling awfully Frenchy today. For this edition of Weekend Warriors, it’s time to laissez les bon temps rouliér! We noticed many of our Sun City artists this year are from France. So to soundtrack your weekend, we’ve got three mixes from our Français acts for all les guerriers (warriors) out there. And you wanna know the best part? They’re all available for download! Enjoy.

Mixmag Mix Of The Week: French Fries & Bambounou

French Fries and Bambounou are two talented Parisians out on a mission to create music where house, techno and bass all merge together. Back in April, les garçons were asked by Mixmag to provide the Mix Of The Week. For the just-shy-of-an-hour mix, the boys intertwine a long list of stripped down, four-to-the-floor beats bordering on punchy and chest-rattling. Break out the sub-woofer for this one.

Popof at Inox Nightclub Opening

When Inox Nightclub first opened their doors in Toulouse, France, they called on recent Sun City addition Popof to bring the energy to the opening for a Form Music (Popof’s label) Showcase. Weaving seamlessly in and out of tracks that are a little bit housey, a little bit minimally, and lot-a-bit groovy, Popof’s two hour mix is filled with rolling basslines, trippy sample effects, and tribal vibes all around. We would love to hear this set by any body of water!

House of Vans x Boiler Room: Gesaffelstein

House of Vans is a semi-private event space and skatepark in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. They open the doors to the public for special events, concerts, and this time around, the world-renowned underground pop-up party, Boiler Room. At about an hour and a half, this mix delves into that dark, industrial, techno that monsieur Gesaffelstein is now trademarked for. If you’re going to a party where the people don’t mind being packed like sardines and getting sweaty, this is definitely the mix for you.

Zeds Dead

Born of radical sonic possibilities and limitless permutations, Electronic music has always been a fluid genre where innovation is prized. Having been at the forefront of the sprawling genre since 2009, Dylan Mamid (DC) and Zachary Rapp-Rovan (Hooks), aka Zeds Dead, are acutely aware of how vital new ideas are. That’s why when the Toronto-based producer/DJs finally took time off from headlining festivals, they crafted a debut album full of dynamic, forward-thinking songs that defy categorization and disrupt musical foundations.

The products of two musically-inclined households, DC and Hooks played piano before moving onto the guitar. As teens, they became enamored with the beats of ’90s hip-hop producers (e.g. DJ Premier, Pete Rock) and formed production duo Mass Productions (MP). Like DJ Shadow or RJD2, they explored the boundless potential of hip-hop based instrumental music.

This insatiable appetite for sonic exploration has been the guiding principal of their career. In college, DC and Hooks became entranced by the rhythms of drum & bass, dubstep, and electro. Changing their name to Zeds Dead, the pair founded one of Canada’s most storied club nights: Bassmentality. Initially held in the tiny basement of 751, around-the-block crowds prompted a relocation to Toronto’s Wrongbar, where the duo booked artists like Skrillex, Borgore, and Nero.

Zeds Dead haven’t stopped their ascent since Bassmentality, touring the world, performing to thousands at music festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Osheaga, HARD, Ultra, Tomorrowland Belgium, plus the biggest stages in India, Asia, & South America. Zeds Dead have also launched their own events, notably their annual Deadrocks event at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheater, which they most recently sold out in June of 2016, and their first annual Deadbeats Toronto event at Echo beach in August 2016.

The group’s compelling, high-intensity live shows double as a showcase for their ever-expanding catalog. To date, Zeds Dead has released projects with electronic music titans like Ultra (The Living Dead) and Mad Decent. The duo considers their 2014 EP, Somewhere Else (Mad Decent), a significant artistic milestone. With features from Twin Shadow and Perry Farrell, among others, Hooks and DC seamlessly fused the sonic hallmarks of contemporary hip-hop with brain-melting bass, poignant piano keys, and more.

“The way Somewhere Else came together, the concept behind it, and the way we worked with other people — it was closer to my main vision for Zeds Dead,” says DC.

Zeds Dead fully realizes this vision on their forthcoming album, Northern Lights. Released via the group’s DeadBeats imprint, it is the culmination of two musical journeys, of years of collaboration, touring, and recording. As such, the album encompasses much of life’s emotional complexities. Some songs evoke the wistfulness of nostalgia, others the uncertainty of the present. While others still brim with bright-eyed hope for the future.

“It’s music that works best at night. The northern lights are something beautiful and vibrant coming out of the night sky,” explains DC. “That contrast provided the framework for the album.”
