Good Eats, Better Drinks - Your Guide to Dining in Panama During Your Stay for The Day After Festival

When you make your way to Panama for The Day After Festival, you’ll notice how remarkably diverse the country is. As a transit point for international commerce in the past, Panamanians’ genes stretch from Spain, Africa, China and India, as well as the Middle East, Central Europe and North America. Because of this, Panama has a wide array of food just ready to be eaten.

The Basics

One of the best things about Panama is that it has excellent seafood. You’ll come across a lot of corvina, which is a type of sea bass that’s served grilled or as ceviche. Speaking of which; ceviche of all types is also very common in Panama. This includes octopus and shrimp. Another staple of the Panamanian diet is rice and beans. They are served alongside nearly everything, but are prepared in a variety of ways using different spices and herbs.

Panama’s national alcoholic drink is seco. Seco is made from sugarcane and is often mixed with milk. Beer is most popular of course and there are four local brands — Balboa, Atlas, Soberana and Panama.

Best Restaurant Bets

Las Tinajas

Located in Panama City, this friendly spot is the idle authentic and traditional Panamanian restaurant, offering tortillas, seafood, tropical fruits and typical entertainment.

Cafe De Asis

Cafe De Asis is one of the hippest little restaurants occupying a corner of the old town. Everyone who is in-the-know comes here. The owner makes a potent sangria by secret-recipe and also sells some of the best rums in the world.

Brooklyn Cafe

If you’re looking for some American treats, look no further than Brooklyn Cafe. Owned by a Panamanian woman who fondly remembers her time in the States, the NYC-style cafe is the perfect spot for a cappuccino or muffin, but the daily plato ejecutivo is also a huge draw because it is a slightly upscale version of the traditional Panamanian lunch.

Manolo Caracol

This restaurant is perfect for blending tropical tastes. The creative cuisine ranges from sole carpaccio to ginger prawns and beef tongue and fire-roasted lobster. There’s an open kitchen so you can to watch the cooks try to not burn stuff. Take advantage of the wide selection of wine to splurge on too.

La Rosa Méxicano

This is a hotspot for many. You can start with fresh guacamole handmade right at your table or move immediately to the cocktails which are even more impressive. Try the watermelon margarita topped with a sprig of rosemary.

El Mercado de Mariscos (The Seafood Market)

This is one thing you have to experience at least once during your stay in Panama. The Mercado de Mariscos is the best place to buy fresh fish in Panama City. You name it – they probably sell it. This is a true open market and there is an excellent restaurant right above the seafood market. You can actually buy whatever you want in the market and take it upstairs to the restaurant, where they will prepare it any way you like. Seriously.

artist nom de stripWith the dust not even settled from his latest collaboration with Congorock in “Minerals,” the ever eclectic Nom De Strip returns to Chris Lake’s Rising Music for the first time since summer anthem “Devil’s BBQ” alongside Nezza.

First premiered back in September when Chris Lake and TJR took over Diplo and Friends on BBC 1Xtra, “I Can’t Believe” is another stellar track to add to Nom’s discography. Packing in the energy, “I Can’t Believe” is a dance floor ready electro house tune. Equipped with intense high pitched synths, the gritty, ominous vocals guide you throughout track. With a bass line that just won’t quit, “I Cant Believe” just solidifies Nom’s reputation as a genre-blending artist and will fit into any high-energy set.

NERVO, R3hab, and Ummet Ozcan premiere music video for ‘Revolution’

artist nervoHot of the heels of their world wide smash hit “Revolution,” The Gift duo NERVO alongside R3hab and Ummet Ozcan are keeping the momentum with some visual stimulation.

Back in November, the Aussie sisters had an open casting call in Los Angeles looking for 10 and 15 fans to be extras in the music video. Premiering on Dancing Astronaut, the official music video for “Revolution” is a great accompaniment to the Beatport chart-topping hit. The selected fans joined the four artists in a desert showdown between some hologram infantrymen. By the end of the video, you’ll definitely want to start a revolution.

Nerd Rage drops Horns Up EP on Subhuman

artist nerd rageNerd Rage has had a very eventful year turning out originals and remixes left and right with tracks like “Power Treaty” and OCTiV’s “Fatality.” So it comes as no surprise that he would close out 2013 with a bang – or some bangers.

Out on the Subhuman imprint, Nerd Rage released two high energy tracks on the Horns Up EP. The title track “Horns Up (The Movement)” is relentless often changing between drumstep and drum and bass. Ridden with rock and metal influences, “Horns Up” needs to be played loud. The second track “Yeah Right” switches the tempo to 128 BPM but never relinquishes any intensity. With bleeps and 8-bits soaked in the in-your-face tune, this song does not disappoint.

Grab the Horns Up EP today – we bet you’ll hear it when Nerd Rage performs at The Gift.

We’ve still have weeks left on our countdown so that means we have plenty of time to stay up-to-date with our amazing Day After Festival lineup before they make their way to Panamá City, Panamá on January 10-12th. For today’s Day After Drop, we’ve got two releases of our talents that are hot and fresh off the press!

Buy your tickets today and be a part of the celebration!

Dannic climbs Beatport charts with ‘Mako’ remix

artist dannicThough relatively new on the scene, Dannic is making up for lost time by releasing some stellar productions as of late. On his latest remix efforts, the Day After Festival talent returned to his Revealed Recordings family and released a take on Los Angeles duo Mako’s “Beam.”

Dannic turns the original vocal nature of the track into a progressive dance floor banger. From start to finish, you feel the high-spirited vibe of “Beam.” The vocals pairs nicely with the big room strings that the Dutchman weaves in and around the track. “Beam” is undoubtedly festival-ready and comes equipped with a hard drop that is sure to get crowds moving.

We aren’t the only ones who are fans of Dannic’s transformation on “Beam.” The track has been climbing up Beatport’s main chart ever since it was released December 2nd and now sits at #2. Grab the track today and let’s get it to #1.

Sidney Samson releases ‘Make The Club Go Like’ with Alvita

artist sidney samsonSidney Samson has been a mainstay in house music for quite some time now. “Make The Club Go Like” is the newest electro offering from the talent and for this release, he’s teamed up with Alvita.

Originally premiered on Hardwell’s On Air radio show, “Make The Club Go Like” in a phrase, this track is crazy insane. The build incorporates some piercing bass pads that lie on top of relentless snares. With a windup that lasts for a full minute, the two certainly have no problem with taking their time to tease the audience. And the grime on the bass line is just offensive.

Out on Sidney’s Rock The Houze imprint, “Make The Club Go Like” will have The Day After Festival go like…
