Sun City Music Festival Artist Profile: Droog

The story of Droog is one of friendship and perseverance. The word droog itself comes from the made up Nadsat language in Anthony Bugesses’ A Clockwork Orange meaning “friend.” What better way to describe the trio of friends Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe who have been building a steady repore in the industry since their beginnings eight years ago. All from different corners of the world, they met through dance music forums online and eventually began to play together. After some encouragement from a friend (and daytime movie producer), the boys kicked off their mission to take over the town.

Based out of L.A., the group first started gaining recognition for their respected weekly at the world-famous Avalon Hollywood. The party was legendary for hosting some of the biggest international house and techno talents. From 2007 to 2011, Droog had held down a residency at Avalon rooting themselves as a trusted source for truly innovative underground music.

In 2009 the gifted triplet journeyed into a different realm of the music industry by launching the label, Culprit, hosting and array of music from friends, seasoned veterans, and of course, themselves. “The idea is to have a balance between the truly local, homegrown — not necessarily indigenous to L.A., but people who are based in L.A.,” says Droog’s Andrei Osyka, “and people who come from outside of L.A. but have a special affection and connection to the vibe that is happening right now in L.A.”

Currently, you can find the collective producing original and remixed material for revered labels like Crosstown Rebels, Noir Music and Get Physical. Go in stores or online to grab your tickets to see techno mainstays Droog perform at this year’s Sun City Music Festival.

Sun City Music Festival Weekly Playlist: Reeeeeeemix!

Bootlegs, mashups, reworks – no matter what you call them, there is always something to love about the art of the remix. And with Sun City Music Festival just around the corner, there are bound to be some remixes that boom from the speakers at Ascarate Park this August 31st and September 1st. Have you bought your tickets yet?

For this week’s edition of Sun City Music Festival’s weekly playlist, we are celebrating the remix. We’ve got five recent tracks from our Sun City lineup that that make you want to scream, “Reeeeemix!”

Christian Smith – Tower (Sébastien Léger remix)

Out soon on Christian Smith’s Tronic imprint, Sébastien Léger uploaded this preview.

Featuring his signature self-coined “Seb Style” as well as the xylo’s we love in his production so much, this remix of “Tower” is a much anticipated release for the truly respected artist.

Chicken Lips – He Not In (Eats Everythings All American VIP Remix)

Eats Everything has uploaded the All American VIP version of his Chicken Lips remix.

This remix is a banger and he’s has completely transformed the original track yet again. Who doesn’t love a good bassline?

Kaskade – Atmosphere (GTA Remix)

Miami duo GTA has taken on another Kaskade track with their latest rework of “Atmosphere.”

The boys have gone for a high-energy progressive house take on this track, rather than trappin’ it out. This remix keeps the integrity of the original track, while providing a drop with deep aggressive kick drums.

King L – Val Venis (Brodinski Remix)

This free download was hand picked from Brodinski‘s latest rap-leaning mixtape release.

Brodinski gives the original audio his own alternative, electronic flare.

Dooze Jackers – Got Line (Ookay Remix)

We love that Ookay doesn’t care about genres and this track is a perfect example of that. Is it trap? Is it juke? Is it moombah? We’ll never know. But get ready to dance to dance to this.

Sun City Music Festival Weekend Warriors: GTA, Dillon Francis, Brodinski

During the week, we are cooped up at school or at work, just trying to make it through the long hours for what we’re really looking forward to – the weekend. Well here it is! This week, we’ve got three sets from our Sun City Music Festival lineup and this time, they’ve brought some of their friends in the studio. It’s great to hear how our acts play with friends. But for Sun City, they’ll be playing for friends. If you haven’t bought your tickets to the Labor Day weekend event, you can order online, or in select stores.

GTA on Diplo and Friends (BBC Radio 1Xtra)

GTA were invited by Diplo to take over the decks for an hour in this episode.

Why We Love It

GTA juxtaposed deep house and electro tracks, as seen in his transition from “Sundown” (Fyor Remix) to GTA, Pari sand Simo’s “Canadia.” We love their use of multiple genres, including tracks from Missy Elliot, Lil Jon, P. Diddy and 2 Chainz. Need something to get the party started? Here you go!

Dillon Francis on Diplo and Friends (BBC Radio 1Xtra)

Dillon Francis was invited by Diplo to take over the decks for an hour in this episode.

Why We Love It

Dillon delivers a perfectly tuned mix that gets you moving. First off, he goes through an entire moombah segment, reminding us why we love moombahton. Then he goes into a harder jump-up style in his set, using some of the newer sounds we’ve heard from him. This set is solid all the way through.

Mixmag 30th Birthday Mix Of The Week: Brodinski & Louisahhh

Back in June, internationally known publication Mixmag turns 30 years old. To celebrate, they invited a series of their favorite artists to take over their Mix of The Week series. Handpicked by the Mixmag office, first up was Bromance label mates Brodinski and Louisahhh!!!

Why We Love It

Brodinski and Louisahhh!!! have joined forces to create a dark, yet cerebral, mix that highlights the reason why the world is head over heals with the Bromance crew. We’re really digging Turbo Turbo’s “Your Mind.”
