Sunset Music Festival Artist Spotlight: Brass Knuckles

Sunset Music Festival Artist Spotlight: Brass Knuckles

Sunset Music Festival outfit Brass Knuckles is unlike any other trio in dance music right now. Incorporating both live and electronic instruments to their music, we can’t wait to see Brass Knuckles do some damage on our Set stage next week. Have you bought your tickets yet?

The Miami trio consisting of Danny D’Brito, Tony Livadas, and Anthony Pisano don’t look at themselves as a DJ group but rather as a band. Fusing their hard-hitting elements of house, electro, pop, nu disco, and even rock, the group is a relentless force of irresistible vocals, death defying drops, and innovative instrumentation. The boys first came together in 2009 when old-time band mates D’Brito and Livadas met Pisano and instantly formed a bond. One day, Pisano came into practice wearing a shirt with brass knuckles on it. The image just clicked for D’Brito saying, “I’m thrilled Anthony wore that shirt on that particular day. The name represents us so well. The music is often tough and in your face. It makes an impression.”

It wasn’t long before the trio would start creating original material as well as creating a lot of remixes. Their 2011 track “Lie to You” became the catalyst to their initial rise, making its way to dance floors and music blogs around the world. The success of the track also lead to a global tour through Asia and Europe. Ultimately though, it was Brass Knuckles’ debut release Bad Habits on the revered Ultra Recordings imprint that would thrust them into the spotlight.

Currently traveling around the country, Brass Knuckles brings their Bad Habits tour to Sunset Music Festival, May 25th. Buy your tickets today!

Brass Knuckles

Truthfully, the Miami trio–D’Brito, Tony Livadas, and Anthony Pisano–is unlike any other outfit in electronic dance music right now. Fusing together elements of traditional house, electro, pop, nu disco, and even a little rock, they come out of the gate swinging with irresistible vocal hooks, staggering drops, and live instrumentation. Once Brass Knuckles hits, you’ll feel it.

After years of playing in bands together and collaborating on a myriad of musical projects, D’Brito and Livadas hooked up with Pisano in 2009. Instantly bonding, the three musicians decided to start laying down original material in addition to doing a bevy of remixes including Michael Jackson’s celebrated “Get On The Floor”. They turned heads across the blog-o-sphere and in clubs worldwide when they dropped “Lie to You” in 2011 though. Highly successful global touring followed with a full jaunt through Asia and Europe including a Croatia gig in front of 10,000 people supporting genre legend Fatboy Slim. However, their debut EP for Ultra Music immensely ups the ante across the board.

First single, “Bad Habits”, careens from propulsive handclaps and bombastic guitar into an instantly unforgettable refrain from singer John Ryan about something we all share in common.

“Absolutely everybody out there has bad habits,” smiles Pisano. “That’s why people can relate to the track almost immediately. It catches their ear, and that’s what we hope every song does.”

Further separating themselves from the pack, live piano drives the soulful and sexy “Alive”, while a tribal stomp fuels the torrential energy of “Hurricane”. Pisano goes on, “We did a show in Missouri in front 5,000 people. The next day, Danny and I were on the plane and we wanted to come up with a concept that would work for a large audience. We got the idea for ‘Hurricane’ on the plane.

Livadas explains, “We’re three different people, and we bring more of a party and a bigger energy than just one DJ might. We like to incorporate as many of our influences as possible. There aren’t any boundaries to what we do. A good song is a good song.”
In some ways, their impact remains encapsulated in their very moniker. One day, Pisano was wearing a shirt with Brass Knuckles on it, and the image just clicked for D’Brito. “I’m thrilled Anthony wore that shirt on that particular day,” he laughs. “The name represents us so well. The music is often tough and in-your-face. It makes an impression.”

That impression will stick with listeners for a long time to come to, whether they hear the band live or on tape. D’Brito concludes, “We want people to relate to our music, understand it, love it, and be able to party to it. We want them to feel good. Hopefully, they can escape from reality and get lost in it.”

Sunset Music Festival Sound Mashup: Markus Schulz and Carnage

We love that our Sunset Music Festival artists connect with their fans on a more friendlier level. Though some of you are a part of the slaying of mythical creatures crew, or a members of the #ChipotleGang, it’s easy to see why fans of Markus Schulz and Carnage are so in love in their personalities and their music – no matter how different their sound is.

Markus Schulz

As a man of many tastes and talents, Markus Schulz has never stuck with one sound. For the past decade, Markus has crafted and honed in on his multiple music identities, whether it be through progressive, trance or house platforms. His fan-coined nickname “unicorn slayer,” refers to his signature hard-driving productions that destroy the cheesy, fluffy productions of his peers. His latest artist album Scream could be best described as a love story told through a journey of house and trance. You can catch the slayer May 25th when he takes the Isis stage at Sunset Music Festival. Buy your tickets today!

Carnage

Carnage first came to our attention for his ridiculous trap releases, but he has since stepped out of his comfort zone. His latest single “Signal,” showcases his take on that big room “festival-style house” sound. But after the second breakdown, the track morphs itself into that trap style that put his name on the map not even a year ago. As for the rest of 2013, Carnage has been working on some some other goodies including some more electro house and some drum and bass. We hope we get to hear some of what he has been working on Carnage takes over the bass stage at Sunset Music Festival. Buy tickets now!

Markus Schulz

Over the last 10 years Markus Schulz has crafted the individual musical identities of progressive, trance & house into his own unique hybrid sound. The combined influence of his headlining DJ sets; Armada and Coldharbour label releases and highly prominent Global DJ Broadcast radio show have seen him at the forefront of the US EDM revolution. This success has been reflected in weekly sets spun in front tens of thousands, a GDJB listenership up in the millions and critically acclaimed albums, including ‘Do You Dream?’ and most recently ‘Scream’. Following several highly ranked positions, in 2008 Schulz broke into the # 10 of DJ Mag’s Top 100 chart. Following a Top 10 position for four years, Markus is now polling #13 in 2012. In October 2012, he was voted ‘America’s Best DJ’ by DJ Times Magazine, and stands as the busiest international DJ playing out of the United States.

Through his natural audience interaction, flawless harmonic mixing, intuitive tune selection and now famous open-till-close sets, he has wowed crowds in every major metropolis. Schulz’s DJ career has run largely parallel to that of his productions. In the early noughties, having concentrated on the hinterland between trance & progressive, he began to reach audiences further and further afield. His career received a significant boost when, in 2004, he signed with heavyweight DJ agency, David Lewis Productions (also home to Armin van Buuren). Now a regular fixture at the world’s biggest & most famous clubs, arenas and festivals, he lays down his inimitable trance-progressive vision on a weekly basis. In Europe, he’s smashed Transmission, Nature One, Dance Valley, Electronic Family, Sunrise and Tomorrowland; worked tent-pegs loose at Creamfields; gridlocked Global Gatherings and played open-till-close sets at Space, Miami, Avalon, LA and Amnesia, Ibiza. Stateside the colossal Electric Daisy, Nocturnal, and Ultra Festivals have all felt Schulz pressure and yet further afield still he’s engineered floor uproar across South East Asia and Australia. Schulz has polled 4 consecutive years inside DJ Mag’s world’s top 10, is regularly ranked in the FTB, Trance Addict and Trance Podium charts as trance’s 2nd biggest spinner and won Best American DJ at the 2008 IDMAs.

Born in Eschwege, central Germany, Markus emigrated to the United States. Age 13, his dance music awakening came during the grip of the country’s then-nascent breakdance scene. His early production and DJ career roughly tracked that of the second Stateside House explosion and he caught his first production break in 1993 when he remixed Sagat’s ‘Why Is It? (F** Dat)’ for FFrr. Markus’ freshman production release followed in 1994 with the 6-track ‘Plastik Trax EP Vol 1’. Throughout the mid to late Nineties he continued to accrue acclaim with a range of releases on numerous luminary U.S. labels. In 1998 he recorded ‘You Won’t See Me Cry’ for Plastik Records (his first label), which was picked up by the UK’s Eve Records and became his first non-domestic release.

Schulz’s sound notably came quickest to the ears of European DJs. Following the formation of the Armada group in 2005, Armin sought Markus out and asked him to start compiling tracks for a new vinyl series. The Coldharbour Sessions EPs launched in 2004 (with the first 3 releases coming out on the already established Electronic Elements label). In succession they resoundingly impacted on dancefloors and within 12 months Coldharbour the label came into existence. Named after Markus’ then-production base in London’s Coldharbour Lane, its output immediately brought a new sound-type to Armada’s repertoire. It also became a lightning rod for a new generation of prog-inclined producers — setting in motion the careers of (amongst others) Santiago Nino, Rex Mundi, Mark Otten & Niklas Harding. With 2005 under the spell of Coldharbour’s more refined, minimal yet still melodic take on the trance sound Markus struck again with the first Coldharbour Sessions mix compilation. Such has been the success of the imprint that in 2007 it was joined by sub-label Coldharbour Red. This, in turn, became the launch pad forthe careers of Marcus Schössow, tyDi, Glenn Morrison & Evol Waves and was the point of re-entry for early Schulz side-project, Dakota (see section below). In August 2010 it celebrated it 100th release with Schulz’s cover of Cass & Slide’s ‘Perception’. Seven years after its birth, Coldharbour stands among the top tier of trance & progressive labels. Getting regular props from the press, in 2011 DJ Mag stated that it was: “an imprint in the rudest of good health!” while Mixmag said: “Coldharbour is a label fair brimming with ready-to-break production talent.”
