Sun City Music Festival Artist Profile: Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike

Sun City Music Festival act and brotherly duo Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are easily one of the most recognizable names in the dance music game right now. Known for their killer remixes and festival-ready house, they have gained a tremendous amount of support from some the industry’s main heavyweights and proved they are a force to be reckoned with.

Dimitri and Michael Thivaios did not begin their dreams together. Dimitri Vegas started DJing at the age of 14 early in his career, making several appearances in smaller clubs and was also the resident DJ at BeatFM radio. He left Belgium in 1999 and began touring Europe. He lived in Mallorca and Halkidiki, Greece before moving to Ibiza in 2003, where he became the resident at major clubs like Privilege and Space. It was here, where the boys stumbled onto something great. Dimitri recants, “Well we were actually born in Greece but moved to Belgium when we were kids. Mike’s always been more into hip-hop than me and been MCing for a while, then when I was out in Ibiza I was playing house in a club, Mike walked in and started flowing some beats on top of my mix just for fun, and the whole place went nuts. We tried it a couple more times and every time the same reaction so we knew we were on to something special. It’s just blown up from there.”

With a steady formula, the boys began to hone in on their art. But it wasn’t until much later that they would feel they could commit to it fully as a career. Mike recalls in an interview, “I think the pinpoint for us was in 2005 when we decided to move back to Belgium after living years in places like Ibiza etc with non stop parties, build our studio and focus on producing music. We decided to get serious and it paid off.” We first caught wind of the boys in 2007 with their remix of DJ Yoeri’s “Cocaine.” Though the track received relative underground success, it would be their edit of Swedish House Mafia’s “Leave the World Behind” in 2009 that would catapult the duo to their international success.

The year of 2010 also proved to be vital for the boys’ career. Not only did Dimitri and Mike become Tommorrowland residents, a role that they still hold to this day, but they also launched their own label Smash The House, a sub-division of the revered Spinnin’ Records.

Currently, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike are preparing for the 2013 edition of Tomorrowland going down this week, but you can catch the duo when they make their way to El Paso for Sun city Music Festival. Have you bought your tickets yet?

Sun City Music Festival Sound Clash: Droog, Borgore

Today, we’re clashing the sounds of two Sun City Music Festival artists — one that’s members are plucked from all over the place, and the other imported from Israel and then from across the Atlantic. Though their styles are completely different, we love the thought of blending the sounds of both Droog and Borgore. But we think the fans from both sides can agree that these two artists, are masters in creating their unique sound. And you’ll be able to see that sound in action come August 31st and September 1st. Buy your tickets today to score the best deal.

Droog

Based out of L.A., Droog, meaning “friend,” first started gaining recognition for their respected weekly at the world-famous Avalon Hollywood. The party was legendary for hosting some of the biggest international house and techno talents. From 2007 to 2011, Droog had held down a residency at Avalon rooting themselves as a trusted source for truly underground talents.

Now, as a production trio, the boys have begun to hone in on their style, making excursions into mood-enhancing, spellbinding tech house loaded with trippy motifs, fat synths, and lyrics/vocals that might confuse and intrigue you. This is made evident by their Westbound EP released back in 2011. The track “Unhinged” is their signature spooky formula and wrapping it around an uptempo house jack and haunting, wobbly-pitched vocal. The effect on the lyric pulling me… closer… is so eerily wonderful, sitting on the corner of sensual and creepy. It’s one of our favorites.

Today, you can find the collective producing original and remixed material for revered labels all around the world. You can get on the action and see our droogs as Droog performs at this year’s Sun City Music Festival. Go in stores or online to grab your tickets today!

Borgore

Borgore is one of the most controversially loved artists in dance music right now. If not for his social media antics, than definitely for his memorable, catchy, and sometimes questionable lyrics. Early tracks like “Icecream” and “Love” were underground successes and helped catapult him to the world-renowned fame he’s sitting at today. As a producer he creates a unique sounds in bass and bass accessories, calling it “Gorestep” and incorporating triplet drum patterns and heavy metal influences, no doubt an influence from his days in the band Shabira. Perhaps our favorite example of this “Guided Relaxation Dub” and his recent banger “Decisions” released last year on Buygore Records with backup vocals provided by Miley Cyrus.

Known for his crazy energy and interactive live shows, expect nothing less than a bass-in-your-face energy filled set when Borgore takes the stage at Sun City Music Festival. Buy your Sun City tickets today!

Sun City Music Festival Artist Profile: Steve Aoki

If there is anything we’ve learned from attending a Steve Aoki show, it’s that you never know exactly what’s going to go down. From cake being thrown in peoples’ faces to inflatable rafts gliding over crowd, these are just a few of the things the world has come to expect at a Steve Aoki show. And it’s been like that since the early beginnings of his career.

Steve Aoki first started DJing he was a student at the University of California in Santa Barbara under the moniker Kid Millionaire. Steve has never been known to do things the easy way. He began producing records and hosting concerts in his living room, calling the makeshift venue, the Pickle Patch. In 1996, now in his early 20s, Steve created the now world famous label Dim Mak Records. Dim Mak is the Chinese form of martial arts also known as the “Death Touch,” and 17 years later he’s still partying strong.

As a producer, Steve has created a series of popular underground mix albums and tracks that have scored him success on charts around the world as well as awards from BPM Magazine and Billboard. His work as a remixer spans from names like the Jackson 5, Lenny Kravitz, Kanye West, Eminem and Snoop Dogg. And with his knack for collaboration, he has worked with artists like Kid Cudi, will.i.am, Afrojack, and Armand Van Helden, just to name a few. We’re not sure what goodies he’ll bring for his performance at Sun City Music Festival, but what we do know is that the best way to see Steve is in person. So, have you bought your tickets yet?

Sun City Music Festival Sound Clash: Dillon Francis, Seven Lions

The month of July is rearing to an end. And you know what that means. Sun City Music Festival will soon be here. If you want to experience Texas’ largest dance music event, grab your tickets quick! Tickets are available online and in stores.

On today’s edition of your Sun City Sound Clash, we’re merging two artists who’ve helped pioneer their own original sound. Whether we’re in the mood for a little moombah or maybe a little trance step, there is no denying the talents of Dillon Francis and Seven Lions – not matter how different their two sounds can be.

Dillon Francis

The 25 year old L.A. native Dillon Francis is already a staple in dance music today. Though his first release was only three years ago, Dillon Francis has since risen to fame with a little help from endorsements by Diplo. The track that the two collaborated on, “Que Que” was also a breakthrough for a budding new genre. Known for being one of the pioneers of the sub-genre movement moombahton, in 2012 Francis became the first moombahton artist to achieve the number-one spot on Beatport’s Top 5 Releases Chart with the release of his Something, Something, Awesome EP. While Dillon has made some poppin’ and sweatin’ viral videos in recent months, it is his blend of moombahcore, moombahton, electro house, trap, and dubstep that keeps fans coming back for more. Get your masta blasta fix at Sun City Music Festival this August 31st and September 1st, when Dillon Francis takes the stage. Grab your tickets now!

Seven Lions

The 25-year-old California native, Seven Lions, or Jeff Montalvo, began making music when his dad brought home a Macintosh and keyboard when he was seven. Though he played in bands throughout middle school and high school, Montalvo began producing in his late teens. “For me, it was the most accessible thing, to start picking up something like drums as opposed to something like electronic music. My transition out of playing with a band was because I got tired of waiting for my band all the time — I wanted to just start making music so I started composing electronic music by myself,” Montalvo explains.

Montalvo’s breakthrough debut to the dance music world came in 2011 with his remix of Above & Beyond and Zoe Johnston’s “You Got To Go.” I won the official remix competition, which is how I got involved with Above & Beyond. I don’t know if they were expecting the track to do as well as it did.” How well did it do? The track sat at #2 on Beatport’s Dubstep chart for over 6 weeks, running alongside Skrillex’s remix of “Levels.” Fans of both trance, dubstep, and everything in between are easily drawn to Montavalo’s. and his melodic take on dubstep. Known for his fusion of the two genres, we welcome Seven Lions to our stages at Sun City Music Festival. Get your tickets online or in stores today.

Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike release Tommorrowland anthem “Chattahoochee”

Starting later this week on the 26th, the 2013 edition of Tomorrowland will open its gates on the beautiful fields of Boom, Belgium. And even though the event draws hundreds of thousands of dance music fans from across the world, we at home can get to tune in via Tomorrowland’s Official YouTube channel.

For the fourth year in a row, Sun City Music Festival talents and Tomorrowland residents Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike have been chosen to create the world-renowned event’s anthem. Picked by the minds over at ID&T, the Tommorrowland anthem captures the spirit and essence of the legendary event. Named after the site for TommorrowWorld in Georgia, “Chattahoochee” is a massive banger that is tailor-made for the main stage.

Having premiered on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 Essential Selection show and already raking in over half a million views on YouTube in a little over three weeks, “Chattahoochee” is now available exclusively through Beatport for two weeks. Out on Smash The House mega-label Spinnin’ Records, we’re sure you’ll hear this rukus track Labor Day weekend when the Belgian brothers take the stage at Sun City Music Festival.

TJR releases “What’s Up Suckaz” on Rising Music

Sun City Music Festival act TJR first struck gold on Chris Lake’s Rising Music imprint with the release of his hit single “Ode to Oi” last year. Always reinventing his live sets and never feeling confined with producing one genre, TJR or TJ Rozdilsky, has been making a huge name for himself with his output of fist pumping club bangers and being the man behind crossover tracks like Pitbull’s platinum-selling hit “Don’t Stop The Party.”

This week, TJR is back with a bouncy electro track brimming with energy titled “What’s Up Suckaz.” Though the California-based artist teased us with a hilarious self-sung version of the track on Soundcloud about four months ago, the real thing is so much better. “What Up Suckaz” is a grimier number than its “Ode” predecessor and infused with smooth, rounded basslines that will keep you going. We’re sure you’ll hear this track with TJR takes the stage August 31st and September 1st. Buy your tickets today!

Sun City Music Festival Artist Profile: Droog

The story of Droog is one of friendship and perseverance. The word droog itself comes from the made up Nadsat language in Anthony Bugesses’ A Clockwork Orange meaning “friend.” What better way to describe the trio of friends Andrei Osyka, Brett Griffin and Justin Sloe who have been building a steady repore in the industry since their beginnings eight years ago. All from different corners of the world, they met through dance music forums online and eventually began to play together. After some encouragement from a friend (and daytime movie producer), the boys kicked off their mission to take over the town.

Based out of L.A., the group first started gaining recognition for their respected weekly at the world-famous Avalon Hollywood. The party was legendary for hosting some of the biggest international house and techno talents. From 2007 to 2011, Droog had held down a residency at Avalon rooting themselves as a trusted source for truly innovative underground music.

In 2009 the gifted triplet journeyed into a different realm of the music industry by launching the label, Culprit, hosting and array of music from friends, seasoned veterans, and of course, themselves. “The idea is to have a balance between the truly local, homegrown — not necessarily indigenous to L.A., but people who are based in L.A.,” says Droog’s Andrei Osyka, “and people who come from outside of L.A. but have a special affection and connection to the vibe that is happening right now in L.A.”

Currently, you can find the collective producing original and remixed material for revered labels like Crosstown Rebels, Noir Music and Get Physical. Go in stores or online to grab your tickets to see techno mainstays Droog perform at this year’s Sun City Music Festival.
